ᐅ What can I do if Billy shelves are tipping over against the wall?

Hello everyone, I have a specific issue with my IKEA Billy bookcases, which I have placed against the wall. Despite being secured, they sometimes tip forward or feel very wobbly, even when I only put a few books on the shelves. My question is: What can I do if Billy bookcases tip against the wall? I have already considered wall anchors, but I am unsure which products or methods are truly effective and safe, especially if there are children or pets in the house. Are there any proven tips for installation or technical tricks to ensure stability? Any advice or experiences are very welcome, even if you have similar furniture.
Just a brief addition: If the shelf is against walls that are not load-bearing (e.g., thin drywall), a secure fixing cannot be achieved. In this case, consider an alternative location or anchoring into studs, or possibly a freestanding support/IP securing system.
That is exactly the key point.

Summary: Secure wall mount firmly, place heavy items at the bottom, align the shelf flushThat sounds very helpful, thank you! So far, I have only used the supplied plastic anchors, which were screwed directly into the drywall. The stability is naturally questionable.

If the shelf is mounted on walls that are not load-bearing, a solid fixing cannot be achievedMy walls are indeed drywall panels without a supporting frame in all areas. Can you tell me which anchors are best suited for this case? Or would you recommend a different mounting method? I am concerned that even metal brackets could pull out of the wall in the short term.

Which anchors are best suited for this case? For drywall panels without a load-bearing substructure, so-called hollow wall metal anchors or toggle bolts are the best choice. These expand behind the panel and provide good hold by gripping a larger area within the drywall.
However, even these anchors should only be used for light loads at most. IKEA and similar retailers recommend, for drywall walls, a combination of wall fixing plus stabilizing the shelf at heavy load points with a support leg on the floor to further reduce the risk of tipping.
I would suggest the following plan:
- Use hollow wall metal anchors
- Attach two fixing points at shelf height
- For heavy loads, add additional stabilization with a support leg or base plate that secures the shelf against tipping.
Relying solely on wall fixings in drywall walls, in my opinion, is risky.

I consider it risky to rely solely on wall fixings in drywall (gypsum board) wallsI can confirm that. From my experience, a twofold approach is necessary: on one hand, secure anchors (e.g., hollow wall anchors) for the wall fixings; on the other hand, stabilizing the shelf at the bottom, for example with anti-tip anchors or special floor fasteners.
I also recommend adjusting the shelves so that heavy items are stored as close to the floor as possible to minimize the tipping moment. Additionally, plastic gliders or carpet pads under the shelf can increase friction with the floor and prevent slipping.
