Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and am not completely satisfied with the original hinges. They feel a bit flimsy, and I have the impression that the door stability suffers with frequent use. Therefore, I am considering replacing the hinges with more robust or better dampened models. Has anyone had experience upgrading the BILLY bookshelf hinges or knows alternative models that fit well and are easy to install? For me, increased durability and quieter door closing are especially important.

Can you recommend specific brands or types that are directly compatible or can be swapped with minimal effort? Or are there custom solutions that have proven effective? I appreciate any tips!

Hello Ralokeo,

I’m quite familiar with the BILLY shelf and have replaced hinges myself before. The standard BILLY hinges are simple, so there are several retrofit options available. The Blum Clip Top hinges are the best choice, but you’ll need the appropriate mounting plate to attach them to the shelf. Hettich Soft-Close hinges are also great, just be careful when drilling to avoid damaging any load-bearing parts.

If you like, I can also give you some tips on how to properly adjust the drill holes to maintain the structural integrity while successfully upgrading. If noisy closing is an issue, these models are definitely an improvement.

Long-term tests

I have been using the hinges for almost two years now without any issues. The doors close smoothly and nothing is loose. Regarding installation: The holes were compatible without adjustments, but everyone should check this for their own shelving unit.

If precision is important to you, I would also recommend Salice hinges. They offer good durability, usually feature soft-close functionality, and have a tight opening angle of 90 degrees – perfect for the BILLY. The only downside is that mounting kits may need to be purchased separately.

That would be great if you could briefly share your experience. I’m especially hesitant because I’m worried about compromising stability. How did you attach the hinges without affecting the shelf depth or stability? And in your daily use, are the soft-close hinges noticeably quieter?

Definitely! 🙂 After the upgrade, everything feels much higher quality—there’s no more rattling, and the doors close very smoothly. It really adds to the comfort in daily life! I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates a bit more convenience.
