ᐅ Staircase Lighting – Which Options Would You Recommend?

Hello everyone,

I am currently marking all the electrical boxes and switches. Now I have reached the staircase and was wondering whether a standard 60mm (2.4 inches) electrical box for the lighting should be installed there or if something special is needed. I looked around online but didn’t find a clear answer. Either the lighting looks cheap or it is very expensive (over 100 euros per piece).

Do you have any recommendations for me? I am also open to some kind of downlight.

Thanks and best regards

We will install a continuous light strip about 5cm (2 inches) above the steps for our straight staircase. The cost is around 40€ for the recessed aluminum profiles, 50€ for the LED strip, and 20€ for the 24v power supply... quite reasonable. It should be ready this weekend, and I can share some photos then.

This option seems easier to implement than, for example, 10 separate lights with individual power cables.

I just don’t know how to achieve an exactly straight slot over the entire length. There must be absolutely no bends or waves, as this would be very noticeable with LED strips.

Feel free to share more information and photos if you manage to make it work. This is the kind of solution I have in mind as well!

Of course, it’s a lot of work but nothing too complicated. Chasing the wall, drilling boxes, installing cables and lights – done. All, of course, with a certain level of care and precise accuracy!

I have the same plan, but haven’t found the right lamps yet. For me, the light fixture should be as discreet and unobtrusive as possible. Also, the bulb should be replaceable. Ideally, the whole setup would be dimmable (but that’s not a must).

I’m not a big fan of all those LED recessed downlights you find on Google and eBay. They often look like ugly plastic units that have to be completely replaced if a part fails.

I’m looking for lights with a subtle recessed frame (white), GU10 socket, and “downward light output”... something along those lines.

I’m looking for exactly the same thing. Couldn’t have described it better.

Alternatively, I’ll order the SLV Downunder PUR 80 White and take a look at it.

I have the FRAME CURVE LED from SLV, I believe model 111290, and I am completely satisfied with it; they look very cool.

Can you post a photo? That would be great.

I just don’t know how to make a perfectly straight groove along the entire length. There must be absolutely no bends or waves, as that would be immediately noticeable with LED strips.

That depends on the wall construction you have. We have a timber frame house with drywall. It was simple for us—I used a 3m (10 ft) straightedge for the 5m (16 ft) staircase, placed it on the edges of the steps, and ran a router set to the correct depth along the surface of the straightedge. The result is a perfectly fitting groove in the wall. Now I just need to install the trim and LED strips this weekend.
Staircase under renovation: beige walls, dark steps, loose construction debris at the edges.
