Hello everyone, I want to remove the doors from my IKEA Billy shelf and specifically take out the hinges. Unfortunately, I can’t find a clear guide on how to properly remove the hinges without causing any damage. I’m particularly interested in when the best time is to remove the hinges – before taking off the doors, after unscrewing them, or only after the entire shelf is disassembled. My goal is to keep the parts intact for reuse if possible. Does anyone have practical tips or experience they could share? Thanks in advance!

It is best to remove the hinges on the BILLY shelf when the doors are taken off. Loosen the screws and pull the hinge off. This can be done easily from the side without any force.

Hello kennicolai, regarding your question about extending the BILLY shelf hinges, I’d like to provide a detailed explanation. The hinges are usually attached to the cabinet frame and the door with screws. First, you should remove the doors – this is the most practical initial step. To remove the doors, gently lift them up and then take them off the cabinet frame. After that, you can loosen the screws on the hinges to remove them completely.

When exactly? It’s best to take the hinges off only after the doors are removed. This way, you avoid putting unnecessary strain on the hinges and can remove them more easily. Use a Phillips screwdriver and work carefully to avoid damaging the screws.

Tip: If the screws are stuck, a few drops of WD-40 often help to loosen them more easily. Avoid bending the hinges to ensure you can reuse them later.

Remove the door from its frame, then loosen and remove the screws on the hinges. The hinges are otherwise difficult to access. After that, you can store the doors and hinges separately.

For clarification: The BILLY shelf system normally uses clip hinges that are easily accessible from the back. Removing the hinges before taking off the doors can put too much strain on the screws. Therefore, I recommend working after the doors have been removed and then carefully removing the hinges. When storing, please keep screws and small parts together to avoid missing anything during reassembly.

Exactly – and I’d like to add a bit about the removal process: 1. Take the doors off by loosening the hinge mechanism, usually by lifting a small latch. 2. Once the door is removed, you can carefully loosen the screws that secure the hinge to the cabinet frame without applying force.

3. Take your time to fully unscrew the screws so that the hinge doesn’t get twisted or bent.

4. It’s best to note the position of each screw, as some are different lengths. Keep this in mind, especially if you plan to reuse the hinges.

Common mistake: Some people loosen screws in a cross pattern—loosening one screw slightly first, then the other. This reduces the risk of damaging the hinge.
