Tau-ilanHello everyone, I noticed that my pet has made several small holes and scratches in the thin back panel of the KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA with its claws. The shelving unit is generally not designed for heavy use, but I didn’t expect it to be damaged so easily. Has anyone else had similar experiences with KALLAX back panels and pets? Maybe you have tips on how to repair such scratches or prevent them in the future? I would appreciate it if you could share your solutions or warnings!

Its load capacity is definitely limited. But have you checked whether your pet’s behavior is due to aggressive scratching or just normal claw sharpening? The first step would be to analyze the cause before thinking about repairs or protective measures. That sounds really frustrating. I can imagine how annoying it is when something like that happens. My cat has also scratched some spots, but on the sofa. What helped me was providing several scratching options so she wouldn't damage the furniture. Maybe you can also distract your pet with scratching boards or other alternatives? In any case, the shelf doesn't seem very sturdy against this kind of wear.

1. Small holes can be filled with wood filler or wood putty, then lightly sanded and, if necessary, painted to match the color.
2. If the back panel has multiple holes or is damaged in several places, it can be completely replaced with a thin plywood or MDF panel, which is somewhat more sturdy.
To prevent further damage, I recommend lining the inside of the shelf with protective film or sturdier back panels, or providing appropriate scratching surfaces for pets. This helps avoid additional damage.
In summary: Repairs are usually possible, but the underlying cause should be addressed simultaneously.

Your pet has really left a creative mark there! 😄 Seriously though, a KALLAX back panel isn’t designed for claw-active pets. I’ve had similar experiences—our little tiger also liked to attack the back panel, and he still grins whenever I check the shelf after cleaning. 😂
Maybe protecting the KALLAX with a thin plexiglass sheet could help? Just attach it with double-sided tape, and it’s almost invisible. Or simply keep your furry friend happy with a scratching post and similar items. That way, the walls stay intact and everyone is happy. 🙂
