Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Kallax shelf and noticed that the back panel rattles quite a bit with certain movements. The noise mainly occurs when I slightly wobble the shelf or when placing items on it.
My question to the experts here: What are your recommendations for securing the back panel permanently so that it no longer rattles? I have considered adding spacers or extra screws, but I’m unsure because I don’t want to damage anything. Are there any proven tricks or products you use? Materials for insulation or padding would also be of interest.
Thanks for your advice!

This could help determine whether individual cavities need better fastening or if the entire back panel should be re-secured. If it is localized, a small pin or even a self-adhesive rubber bumper placed directly under the back panel in that spot might be the simplest solution.

PeoDaniel12 Oct 2022 17:08Good evening,
I would like to start here from the basics: The back panel of Kallax is usually made of thin MDF or particleboard, which can naturally be prone to rattling if it is not properly secured. It is important that the back panel fits squarely and flush; otherwise, vibrations will increase.
Practical tips:
- When assembling, be sure to align the back panel correctly and fasten it with appropriately small nails or staples.
- For retrofitting, double-sided tape or foam strips can help.
- In particularly noisy cases, an additional wooden batten attached on the inside can serve as a support surface.
I would recommend trying small, reversible measures first before considering major modifications.

draFrederi13 Oct 2022 08:12Ah, the good old Kallax rattling! 😉
I’m taking a relaxed view: No shelf is complete without its little soundtrack. Jokes aside – a practical and simple solution I often use is small felt pads or cushions on the edges of the back panel. This dampens the noise effectively and can be quickly removed if you want to try something else.
Sometimes it’s enough to adjust the shelf a bit better, maybe slip some small wooden wedges under the feet.
I’d say give that a try, and the rattling won’t stand a chance. Good luck! 🙂

I’m taking it easy on this: No shelf is complete without its own little soundtrack. Exactly! But jokes aside, mujame, another tip: Check if your shelf is standing completely level. Sometimes the back panel rattles simply because the shelf is not stable or wobbles. I added small adjustable plastic feet underneath mine to fix that!
If you replace the back panel, it’s best to use a slightly thicker but not too heavy board, otherwise it will unnecessarily strain the shelf.
You’re on the right track—this can turn out really great! 😉

Sometimes the back panel rattles simply because the shelf isn’t standing stable or is wobbling. That’s true. If the feet are not adjusted for uneven floors, the entire shelf will wobble, causing the back panel to rattle automatically. Just adjust the feet or use small shims.
