ᐅ What should you do if the back panel of your KALLAX unit keeps peeling off?

Ge-ernstHello everyone,
I have the following problem: The back panel of my IKEA KALLAX shelf keeps coming off, meaning it chips at several spots or breaks out entirely. This happens even with normal use, without the shelf being overloaded or unstable.
I mainly use the shelf to store books and lighter items. The back panel is obviously made of a thin MDF or fiberboard sheet, which apparently does not hold up well.
My questions: What do you recommend if the back panel of a KALLAX keeps chipping? Are there effective repair methods or alternatives to permanently stabilize the shelf?
Thanks in advance for your tips!

The back panel of the KALLAX is indeed a thin particleboard or MDF panel, primarily designed for stabilization and not meant to bear significant load. Chipped areas indicate moisture exposure or mechanical stress.
To improve stability, the following is recommended:
1. Replace the back panel with a 3-5 mm (1/8–3/16 inch) thick multiplex or plywood panel.
2. Use screws with washers to avoid damaging the material.
3. Apply wood glue in addition to screws for a secure, long-lasting hold.
4. Avoid moisture exposure or placing the shelving unit in damp rooms.
These measures help prevent further chipping.

Hey,
I also once lost the back panel of my KALLAX – sounds more dramatic than it actually is 😉.
What helped me was replacing the back panel with a thicker wooden board and screwing a few small brackets on the inside.
A little tip: smooth the edges of the board with sandpaper beforehand to prevent splitting.
Now it holds firmly and still looks neat 🙂
