Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelf and noticed that the back panel rattles quite a bit with certain movements. The noise mainly occurs when I slightly wobble the shelf or when placing items on it.

My question to the experts here: What are your recommendations for securing the back panel permanently so that it no longer rattles? I have considered adding spacers or extra screws, but I’m unsure because I don’t want to damage anything. Are there any proven tricks or products you use? Materials for insulation or padding would also be of interest.

Thanks for your advice!

Hi,

It’s best to secure the back panel with small nails or staple pins. If that’s not enough, insert thin felt strips between the wall and the shelf to dampen vibrations.

Don’t use too much force when hammering, or the back panel material may warp.

Hey mujame, I totally understand that problem! The rattling noise can be really annoying, but don’t worry, it’s easy to fix! 🙂 I simply glued small strips of foam rubber to the back of my Kallax, and it helped a lot—no more noise and it stays firmly in place. Give it a try; it’s inexpensive and very effective! 😉

Honestly, do you really need a back panel like that? Often it’s just decorative because the shelf otherwise looks unstable.

Why not leave it out completely or replace it with a sturdier plywood board? The thin back panel made of particleboard tends to be flimsy as soon as the shelf is even touched.

You can hardly avoid rattling altogether if the base material itself isn’t suitable.

That is an option, but it should be kept in mind that the back panel also provides lateral bracing for the shelf. Without it, stability under side loads is significantly reduced.

I would rather recommend securing the back panel with small screw hooks in the corners and adding additional cross braces or metal brackets if the shelf feels very wobbly.

Insulation against rattling usually works better with soft materials such as foam rubber or felt, as already mentioned here.

I can understand well how annoying the rattling noise is. I experienced something similar and was also worried about damaging the furniture if I tried to make any adjustments.

What helped me was a bit of patience and careful fine-tuning. I fixed the back panel with small drops of wood glue and then added cushioning with lightweight felt strips. This way, the back panel is now secure without the risk of causing any damage.

Sometimes, simply tightening the screws slightly or readjusting the shelf feet can stop the whole unit from wobbling and prevent any rattling noise.
