Hello everyone,

I have been dealing with a problem for some time now: a large amount of dust collects behind my KALLAX shelf unit from IKEA. The unit is placed directly against the wall, but because of the open compartments, dust travels back there, making me feel like I never fully clean behind it during each cleaning session.

I’m curious if anyone else has had similar experiences and how you protect yourself from the dust buildup behind the KALLAX? Are there practical solutions to permanently control the dust issue – perhaps special covers, back panels, or other clever ideas?

I look forward to your tips and experiences on how you handle this common problem!

I simply attached thin plastic sheets behind my KALLAX.

That sounds interesting – how did you fix the plastic sheets? With screws or adhesive? And does it not negatively affect the shelf’s stability?

Why not just pull the KALLAX a bit away from the wall?

Pulling it away is possible, but unfortunately, my space is quite limited. That’s why I’m looking for a solution that keeps the shelf directly against the wall.

Hello Adrianpo,

I solved the issue of the backing board for the KALLAX as follows:

1. Use a backing board for structural reasons: I cut a lightweight MDF panel to exact dimensions and fixed it from the inside with small brackets. Advantage: The shelf gains stability, and dust can no longer settle behind it.

2. Tip: Before installation, be sure to sand the edges of the MDF panel smoothly to prevent dust trails.

3. To prevent dust from escaping, I sealed the joints with silicone – this stops dust from entering from the sides.

4. For a more open look, Plexiglas (acrylic glass) can be used; it reflects light and looks stylish.

In short: A backing board makes a big difference, especially if you want to reduce dust buildup.

If you want, I can provide you with exact measurements and sources.

Avoiding dust behind furniture is difficult. I regularly dust behind my KALLAX unit with a feather duster and then push the shelf back against the wall.

I know that problem all too well! 🙂

I had a fabric back panel custom-made that can be secured with small Velcro strips. It fits perfectly with the living room and is extremely practical for keeping dust away.

The key is to stay on top of it and not wait too long to clean. Then the effort stays manageable – and the feeling of being surrounded by dust becomes a thing of the past! 😉

I think that’s brilliant! Both flexible and stylish at the same time. And when you remove the fabric, you can simply put it in the washing machine – that way, dust doesn’t get trapped in the first place. 🙂

I simply attached them using double-sided mounting tape. It holds very well and keeps the shelf undamaged.
