Hello everyone, I noticed that my pet has made several small holes and scratches in the thin back panel of the KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA with its claws. The shelving unit is generally not designed for heavy use, but I didn’t expect it to be damaged so easily. Has anyone else had similar experiences with KALLAX back panels and pets? Maybe you have tips on how to repair such scratches or prevent them in the future? I would appreciate it if you could share your solutions or warnings!

Hello Tau-ilan, I completely understand your frustration. Especially with pets that like to scratch, these thin panels are not very durable. It is important to first observe your pet and find out why it is scratching at the back panel – is it boredom, stress, or just normal claw sharpening?

For repairs, I recommend carefully filling the small holes with wood filler and then sanding them down. If the back panel is severely damaged, you can replace it entirely, for example with a thin MDF board, which is more durable.

To prevent this from happening again in the future, additional scratching posts, scratching mats, or special covers are a good option. If you like, I can also provide you with some sources for sturdy back panels.

to offer several scratching options

I completely agree. Animals need stimulation and places to scratch; it’s part of their nature.
Additionally, I would improve the stability of the back panel by fixing it from behind with wood glue or attaching a thin protective board.

Regularly checking your pet’s claws is also a good idea to prevent them from becoming too long and sharp, which can cause damage. 🙂

This topic is important because different measures are needed depending on the cause. If the behavior is based on stress or aggression, simply protecting the furniture may not be enough.
Perhaps you should also evaluate your pet’s environment. Are all stimuli and retreat options adequately provided?

Additionally: The typical chipboard used for the KALLAX back panel is really vulnerable. To avoid damage from the start, it’s better to increase stability – acrylic glass or MDF boards are much more durable.

Good question. From what I’ve observed, my pet scratches mainly to sharpen its claws, not out of fear or aggression – although there are phases with some nervous behavior.

Providing scratching options

I’m trying that at the moment but probably haven’t created enough appealing spots yet.

You can repair small holes with wood filler or wood putty

That sounds doable, thanks! I’m also thinking about using a thin MDF panel as a backboard and removing the original back panel for that.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful tips! I’d appreciate more suggestions on how to make the environment more interesting for the pet!
