Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit that I mainly use in the living area. Unfortunately, one of the compartments has recently warped, causing the doors not to close properly and affecting the overall appearance. I have tried several times to adjust the angle of the warp, but the gap remains.

My question to you is: What really helps to prevent or fix warping in a KALLAX shelf unit in the long term? Are there any practical tips or workarounds beyond the usual readjusting? I appreciate any experiences and solution-focused advice, as I would like to solve this problem permanently without having to take the entire unit apart.

Oh wow, that is really frustrating, especially with KALLAX! :-)

I had exactly the same problem, and what helped me a lot was to fully align the shelf and then secure it from the back with additional brackets. I got small metal brackets that you can screw under the back panel to prevent further warping.

That was exactly my issue back then, and I can only say: it’s worth sticking with it! :-) Good luck!

Warping of KALLAX often indicates exposure to moisture. Check the shelf for any moisture and ensure it is placed on a level floor. Sometimes, replacing the back panel with a thicker one helps. Use either a plywood board or MDF, as these provide better stability.

To prevent warping issues with KALLAX, I recommend the following approach:

1. Check the flatness of the floor and the installation surface – even a slight unevenness can create leverage.
2. Replace the thin particleboard back panel with a more stable back panel made of MDF or plywood, which is much more resistant to warping.
3. Reinforce the structure with additional brackets or metal strips at the corners.
4. Ensure proper assembly, especially tightening the screws afterwards and aligning the shelf components.

This usually provides a lasting solution to the problem.

Thanks for your tips so far!

The note about moisture is actually relevant since the shelf is located in a room that can be a bit more humid during winter.

What do you think about mechanical deformation due to excessive weight? I mostly store books and decorations, but I hope the load remains within the KALLAX specifications.

Does anyone have experience with whether the shelf is still compatible with the IKEA doors if the back panel is reinforced? I’m considering replacing the back panel as recommended here:

And if that works: What thickness and material would be best suited? Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I would like to provide a basic explanation about warping, as this is often misunderstood:

A KALLAX shelf is made from relatively thin composite materials, which can easily change shape when exposed to moisture and pressure—especially the back panel, which is usually just a thin particleboard.

If the back panel is not stable, the unit loses its shape, and warped wood is difficult to straighten again. Therefore, it is highly recommended to replace the back panel with moisture-resistant MDF or plywood about 5mm (0.2 inches) thick. The back panel stabilizes the entire structure.

As long as the back panel is not significantly thicker than the original, it should fit well. Some even use thinner phenolic plywood or poplar multiplex to save weight.

Regarding weight: Make sure you do not exceed the recommended maximum load capacity of the individual compartments. The KALLAX is sturdy, but overloading causes the structure to warp more quickly.

I hope this helps you!
