Are there lockable doors available for IKEA’s KALLAX system? I plan to use my KALLAX shelf unit for storing personal items that should occasionally be protected against unauthorized access. Therefore, my question is: Does IKEA or any third-party manufacturer offer special door systems that can be locked and are compatible with KALLAX shelves? Ideally, the doors should not only be lockable but also fit well with the design and be easy to install. I look forward to experiences, tips, or suggestions on what options are available.
As an addition: IKEA does sell doors for KALLAX, but these cannot be locked. For lockable options, I recommend looking for custom-made solutions or modular cabinet doors with built-in locks that fit the dimensions of the KALLAX compartments. It is important to carefully check the dimensions of the compartments (33 x 33 cm (13 x 13 inches) internal measurement) to ensure the doors close properly. Another alternative is universal locks that can be installed on doors by yourself.
I’ve looked into this topic as well – IKEA itself doesn’t offer much in this area, but some manufacturers from the DIY sector have started releasing small box doors with locks. 🙂 If you’re handy, you can also just install small metal locks with hasps. They work well with the KALLAX and don’t look too bulky.
I understand that you’re looking for something that is not only practical but also secure. With open shelves, it can easily feel like personal items are too accessible. I don’t have lockable doors for KALLAX myself yet, but it’s very reassuring to know that there are at least options outside of IKEA that can be used. Do you also have concerns that the installation might be complicated, misael62?
Thank you for the responses so far! My main concern is actually the installation — I would prefer a solution that can be integrated easily without much effort, ideally with an included installation manual. I’m hesitant to experiment with third-party options if they require major adjustments. It’s also important that the doors don’t become too heavy and make the shelf unstable. Maybe someone has already tested a specific door or lock model?
