Hello everyone, I have had an Ikea Besta shelving unit in my living room for about three years, which I mainly use for books and decorations. Recently, I noticed that the furniture becomes a bit wobbly or loses stability after prolonged use—especially when I operate the doors or touch the unit. My question is: What options are there to sustainably improve the stability of Ikea Besta shelving units without having to replace all the parts? I suspect that some screws have loosened or the joints are giving way. Are there any specific reinforcements, effective tips, or alternative assembly methods that have proven successful? I would really appreciate it if you could share your experiences!

Hello, the easiest way to solve the problem is to tighten all screws and wall plugs again. After that, you can install angle irons or small metal brackets in the corners. This will provide significantly more stability.

Hello fikrette, your observations are accurate, and your suspicion that screws have loosened is often correct. For flat-pack furniture like Besta from Ikea, it is advisable to regularly check all connection points and tighten them as needed. Additionally, stability can be improved with simple measures: - Attach small metal brackets inside the carcass corners using screws, which provides a strong corner reinforcement. - If there are problems with the doors, adjust the hinges as necessary. - If the shelving unit stands against the wall, securing it with brackets or screw hooks to the wall greatly enhances stability. If you can carefully strengthen the carcass panels with wood glue (not at the joints, but on the inner surfaces), this also works well. In general, for this type of furniture, regular adjustments significantly extend its service life.

Absolutely! And if your Besta wobbles a bit, it’s like a little workout for the furniture—but it’s better to give it some support, right? 😄 A little tip from me: sometimes it helps to stick felt pads or small rubber pads under the furniture legs if the floor isn’t completely level. This reduces hidden rocking and makes the whole thing more stable and easier to handle.

Another option is if you use the shelf frequently as a room divider or if it stands freely in the room, to attach a sturdy back panel made of a thin MDF board or plywood. You can simply fix this back panel on the inside with small corner brackets. This gives the Besta module significantly more torsional rigidity and prevents wobbling. It is important that the back panel sits as flat as possible – this ensures the reinforcements work optimally.

Thanks for the tips so far! Adding a back panel sounds very sensible since my shelf stands freely. I have another question about this: The original back panel is made of thin particleboard, which already looks slightly cracked. Would it make sense to simply cut a new, thicker back panel from MDF or plywood exactly to size and attach it with brackets? Or should this be done in addition to the original panel? Would such a measure significantly affect the appearance? Also, I’m interested if anyone has experience with adding metal braces—maybe in the middle of the shelf—that provide support under the shelves?
