pijapeoHello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble an Ikea Besta shelving unit and would like to benefit from your experiences. Specifically, I am interested in which screw points I should pay special attention to during assembly to ensure stability and durability. Are there any areas where extra care is needed or where mistakes often happen during screwing? It would be helpful if you could also share tips on how to avoid common pitfalls or which screws must be tightened very carefully. Thanks in advance for your advice!
Hello pijapeo, great question! When assembling the Ikea Besta, the following screw points are particularly critical:
- The connections between the side panels and the base board: everything must be perfectly square here, otherwise the unit will wobble later.
- The attachment of the back panel with nails or screws, which provides stability against lateral movement.
- The fixing of the adjustable shelves, as they often bear dynamic loads.
It is important to insert the dowels accurately and not to leave the cam lock screws (e.g., Minifix screws) too loose. It is recommended to first tighten all screws by hand and then fully tighten everything afterwards to avoid warping.
If you like, I can also post a step-by-step list with possible sources of errors.

Hey pijapeo, glad to hear you’re starting the Besta! 😄 I assembled it a few months ago and can say that the screws on the side panels and the back panel are really the key elements. If you’re careless there, the shelf can easily wobble or become unstable over time.
That almost happened to me because I was holding my drill a bit too loosely. Tip: Take your time and frequently check with a spirit level. And don’t forget to enjoy the assembly, it’s basically Lego for adults! 😎

In addition to the previous tips: when assembling the base unit, the fastening of the back panel with nails or screws should not be underestimated. This component ensures the lateral stability of the shelf. If the back panel is not properly secured, all other fastenings lose effectiveness.
I also recommend checking all screws again after the initial assembly and retightening them if necessary, as wood materials can settle slightly in wooden furniture.

A common mistake is using steel bolts instead of the supplied wood screws, which can affect the fit. It is also important to properly tighten all screws by hand at heavily loaded points, such as the connections of the middle panels, and not to overtighten quick-release fasteners.
In general: Take your time. Although the system can be assembled quickly, quality is always more important than speed. And if you attach a shelf to the wall, the screws for this are a dedicated high-load fixing point – do not compromise here!
