Hello everyone,

Lately, I have noticed that the doors of the IKEA Kallax shelf tend to be relatively stiff and require some effort to open. This is especially noticeable if the shelf is used frequently or if the doors, particularly the lower ones, are under load. I’m curious whether this issue with stiff doors on the IKEA Kallax model is a general problem—that is, if other users have had similar experiences—or if it might be due to specific factors like assembly or usage.

If it is indeed a general design issue, it would also be interesting to hear if there are any practical solutions or tips to improve the door movement without compromising the appearance or stability. What do you think? Thanks for your insights!

Hello!

In my experience with the Kallax shelving unit, stiff doors do occur more frequently, but this is usually due to adjustment and installation.

Typically, the door hinge can be moved more easily with some fine-tuning of the screws. Here is a brief guide:

1. First, check if the hinges are installed correctly and that there is no binding caused by misalignment.
2. Make sure the doors sit flush within the frame, as distortions significantly increase friction.
3. Lubricating the hinges with an appropriate silicone oil can help, but avoid oil-based lubricants since they attract dirt.
4. If the doors carry a heavy load, redistributing the weight (e.g., by rearranging the inside of the Kallax) may help.

Conclusion: stiffness is not a general quality issue but usually a matter of assembly and adjustment. If you like, I can send you a more detailed step-by-step guide for readjusting the doors.

I had the same problem. Just try loosening the screws on the hinges, then readjusting and tightening them again. This usually solves it.

I can easily understand how frustrating it can be when doors are hard to open, especially when you use the shelf daily. I noticed that in my case, the doors stick when the shelf isn’t perfectly level. I only realized this after several attempts and was quite surprised myself.

Maybe it helps to check the shelf carefully again. Despite initial disappointment, with some adjustments and patience, I have managed to get the doors working quite smoothly. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it works out for you too!

A very relevant question. I own the Kallax shelving unit myself in two versions with doors, and the most important point upfront: the doors are indeed sensitive during assembly and adjustment.

For clarification:
- The hinge drilling holes are pre-made at the factory, but there are minimal tolerances.
- If the shelving unit is not perfectly plumb, the doors press against the hinges and can become stiff to operate.
- Likewise, incorrect alignment can cause the doors to slightly jam.

My advice: Use a spirit level to always check all corners of the shelving unit. Then fine-tune the hinges, and if possible, slightly loosen the hinge screws to rotate and set them correctly in position.

Adding small felt or rubber pads on the frame can also help prevent the doors from rubbing directly against the wood.

If these points are considered, the problem is basically solvable and not a design flaw of IKEA.

In my view, there is no systemic issue with the Kallax doors. Stiff operation usually results from installation inaccuracies or excessive load on the doors.

My advice: use screwdrivers with a good grip when adjusting, check the position of the hinges, and ensure an even distribution of weight on the shelf.

This will improve functionality permanently without major interventions.
