Hello everyone, I am currently considering whether there is a practical way to retrofit soft-close functionality on the doors of IKEA KALLAX shelves. I understand that the KALLAX doors originally do not come with soft-close, and I’m wondering if there are compatible damping systems or hinges that can be installed afterward without significantly changing the door structure or mounting. What options are available? Has anyone had experience with models that work, or perhaps even DIY solutions that enable smooth and quiet closing? I have planned the shelf for the living area and would like the doors to close softly and silently. Any advice on potential pitfalls would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Retrofitting soft-close mechanisms for KALLAX doors is generally possible, but it requires special hinges with damping. Standard hinges can often be replaced with soft-close models if the mounting holes match.

When retrofitting KALLAX doors with soft-close functionality, two main factors are crucial: the design of the existing doors and hinges, and the method of attachment to the cabinet body. KALLAX doors are usually very thin, which can make installing typical soft-close hinges—designed for thicker doors—challenging. However, there are versions specifically made for flat doors. It is important that the drilling dimensions match, or that minor adjustments can be made to fit. Another consideration is the load on the damping components: with very heavy doors, cheaper soft-close hinges may fail more quickly. Before purchasing, I strongly recommend verifying the exact model and whether the soft-close mechanism is rated for the door’s weight. Alternatively, soft-close dampers can be installed separately at the edge of the door opening; these are a type of gas spring that prevents the door from slamming shut. Installing them requires precision and sometimes a small recess cutout to accommodate the damper.

Hello and good morning! Your question is very understandable because the KALLAX doors can sometimes close quite loudly. I had the same issue a while ago. The door panels of the KALLAX are a bit thin, so not all soft-close hinges fit easily. My advice: usually, you can find suitable KALLAX doors with integrated soft-close features at IKEA, but if you want to keep your existing doors, I recommend choosing soft-close hinges specifically made for flat doors. Many manufacturers call these "flat band hinges" with soft-close. It is important to check the mounting holes and watch a short installation video to see if the hinges will fit the thin door. Alternatively, some screw-on dampers offer a way to make the attached doors close more gently, although this is not always the most elegant solution aesthetically. 🙂 If you like, I can gladly share some sources for these.

Thank you all for the initial suggestions! @bapar Your idea with the gas struts sounds interesting—do you maybe have a specific model example? I haven't been able to find exact information on the weight of the doors in the description, but I estimate about 3–5 kg (6.6–11 lbs) per door. Installation should require minimal modifications to the door, though a small mill-out is possible. Visually, it should either be discreet or invisible. Does anyone have an opinion on whether it’s worth switching to IKEA’s own soft-close doors, or are those generally much more expensive? Also, do the doors fit the existing KALLAX shelf units with 42x42 cm (16.5x16.5 inch) compartments?

IKEA doors generally fit standard KALLAX compartments. IKEA's soft-close doors are more expensive but come pre-assembled and are guaranteed to be compatible. For retrofitting soft-close hinges, you need to pay attention to the compatible dimensions and thickness of the doors.
