ᐅ KALLAX Doors with Soft-Close – Can They Be Retrofitted?

Hello everyone, I am currently considering whether there is a practical way to retrofit soft-close functionality on the doors of IKEA KALLAX shelves. I understand that the KALLAX doors originally do not come with soft-close, and I’m wondering if there are compatible damping systems or hinges that can be installed afterward without significantly changing the door structure or mounting. What options are available? Has anyone had experience with models that work, or perhaps even DIY solutions that enable smooth and quiet closing? I have planned the shelf for the living area and would like the doors to close softly and silently. Any advice on potential pitfalls would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I have retrofitted soft-close dampers from Häfele to my KALLAX shelving system. They can be installed under the door and prevent loud slamming. Advantage: no milling required and affordable. Disadvantage: the dampers are visible, but unobtrusive. If you value invisibility, they are probably not suitable.

The installation should be done with minimal modifications to the door, but a small routing is possible.

Okay, that’s already helpful. If small routings are possible, I recommend specifically looking for soft-close hinges designed for flat hinges—slimmer models with integrated damping. These are especially made for retrofitting. Other dampers, as @GALENKU mentioned, are a cheaper and technically simpler solution, but they involve some visual compromises.

To assess the load: 3–5 kg (6.6–11 lbs) per door is within the normal range, and most soft-close hinges can easily handle that. What you should check is the length and depth of the drill holes. IKEA doors often have a material thickness of 15 mm (0.6 inches), and the damping modules require enough space inside the hinge cup. If you have the exact dimensions, you can use a hinge gauge to see if the parts fit.

If you remove the original hinges, depending on the type, you can often replace them quite easily. I definitely recommend avoiding cheap models, since quality is very important with soft-close hinges; otherwise, the dampers will fail soon.

Regarding screw-mounted dampers or gas springs: these are indeed a practical solution if you want to keep the existing hinges. They provide support when closing by slowing down the movement, thus preventing slamming. Installation is straightforward: you screw two small brackets, usually at the bottom of the door frame and the shelf. The downside is that you have to accept some visibility. If you prefer a clean design, integrated soft-close hinges are better, even though they require a bit more effort to install.

I would say: Soft-close hinges are the best solution. If you already have the doors, look for suitable models from Blum or Hettich. These often fit thinner doors, which you need for KALLAX. Alternatively, as mentioned before, mounting dampers also works.

Thanks for all the great tips! I’m now leaning towards a combination of installing soft-close hinges with a small recess. Does anyone have a specific recommendation for hinges designed explicitly for KALLAX or similar flat doors? Is there anything special I should look out for when purchasing, aside from the dimensions? The doors are 15mm (0.6 inches) thick and about 40x40cm (16x16 inches) in size.

I often use Blum CLIP Top 110° soft-close hinges for similar doors. They have a relatively flat mounting plate and require only a 35 mm (1.4 inch) hole. It’s important to find a mounting plate that matches your cabinet thickness—possibly the lower version for KALLAX. The hinges are sturdy, and the soft-close function works very reliably.

If you’re unsure about drilling, a drilling template is very helpful to ensure everything fits precisely.
