Hello everyone, I am currently considering whether there is a practical way to retrofit soft-close functionality on the doors of IKEA KALLAX shelves. I understand that the KALLAX doors originally do not come with soft-close, and I’m wondering if there are compatible damping systems or hinges that can be installed afterward without significantly changing the door structure or mounting. What options are available? Has anyone had experience with models that work, or perhaps even DIY solutions that enable smooth and quiet closing? I have planned the shelf for the living area and would like the doors to close softly and silently. Any advice on potential pitfalls would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
An addition to Marlenepa: For 15 mm (0.6 inch) thick doors, standard 35 mm (1.4 inch) cup hinges are commonly used, with a drilling depth of about 12-13 mm (0.5-0.5 inch). Be sure to position your drill accurately, as thinner doors offer less margin for error. Hinges from Blum and Hettich are proven and provide precise soft-closing. I also recommend testing the drill holes and the soft-close function on a sample piece before installation. The mounting plate should match the back panel thickness of your KALLAX (usually 15 mm (0.6 inch) wood panels) to ensure the hinge sits firmly and closes properly.
If you particularly value a gentle closing action, adjustable versions are also available, where the damping resistance can be set.

In case you decide against soft-close hinges: the Blum dampers of the "Tipp-ON BLUMOTION" type are a good option. They offer a door system with integrated push-to-open and soft-close functions, in case you are looking for a complete retrofit set. However, this is more expensive.
Great, that really helps me! I will take a closer look at the Blum CLIP Top 110° soft-close hinges and then check the dimensions of my doors using a template and caliper. The idea of adjustable damping sounds good, as it might allow me to compensate for slight differences between the doors. Many thanks to everyone for the detailed feedback!
