Hello everyone,

I have a problem with the doors on my IKEA KALLAX shelf unit that I installed for loading. The doors get stuck whenever the shelf is fully loaded. More specifically, when the compartments are filled up to the edge or even slightly beyond, the doors no longer open or close properly. I’m wondering what might be causing this. Could it be due to excessive weight, possibly warping of the edges, or is it a mechanical issue with the door hinges? Does anyone have suggestions on how to systematically analyze and best solve this problem? I look forward to expert advice!

Hello Guntis,

regarding your issue with the KALLAX doors jamming when fully loaded: this is actually a common problem often caused by a combination of physical and mechanical factors.

1. Load & material deformation: If the shelf is overloaded, the panels can bend slightly. This minimal deformation is often enough for the doors to rub or get stuck in the openings.

2. Hinges & installation: KALLAX doors are designed for a certain load and installation method. Even small deviations during installation, such as slightly off-square mounting or hinges set too tightly, can significantly affect door clearance.

3. Dimensional tolerances & gaps: Although IKEA products are made with high manufacturing quality, a millimeter tolerance in loading or door positioning can cause friction.

My suggestion is first to load the shelf frame with as evenly distributed weight as possible and check the flatness of the panels. Then inspect the hinges and the gap between the door and the frame. Sometimes adjusting the doors slightly higher or sideways helps – the hinges usually offer adjustment options.

In short: the cause is usually a combination of overloading, material warping, and improperly adjusted hinges.

I hope this helps you!

Hi Guntis 🙂

I agree with taudi here, especially regarding material warping—it’s often underestimated. IKEA usually allows a bit of tolerance—being off by a few millimeters (inches) can really make a difference when the KALLAX compartments are fully loaded.

Maybe also check if the doors are properly aligned on the hinges or if something is slightly off. Sometimes individual shelves slide out a bit and put strain on the door.

And hey, don’t worry—these issues are usually easy to fix! If the shelf is very full, adding an extra shelf board might help distribute the weight better and keep the structure stable. 😉

The doors often get stuck because the hinges are improperly adjusted. Simply adjust them with a screwdriver until the door moves freely again. Weight only plays an indirect role.

It’s interesting that everyone here immediately assumes the issue is with the installation or the hinges.

Sure, that is often the cause, but what if the problem lies in the design itself? IKEA KALLAX is primarily intended for decorative purposes and light storage. If you misuse the shelf as a heavy-duty storage unit, the doors will naturally get stuck—no matter how much you adjust the hinges.

Maybe we should discuss whether the construction is suitable for high loads with doors at all?

The shelf can twist slightly when fully loaded. As a result, the door may no longer fit into the lock or may not move smoothly without force. It is best to reduce the load or distribute it differently.
