Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Kallax shelf at home, and there is a really annoying problem that has been bothering me: the doors of the Kallax slam shut quite loudly. This is unpleasant for the ears, especially when searching the shelf at night, and I’m also concerned that the doors might get damaged over time. Therefore, I would like to know how to make these doors close much more gently without having to constantly slow them down by hand.

Does anyone know of practical and long-lasting solutions for this? Should I install dampers, or are there special hinges or softer closing mechanisms that I can retrofit? Any tips on materials or technical terms I should research would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Wow, I know that all too well! 😃 These doors can really slam loudly sometimes!

I simply attached small self-adhesive felt or rubber bumpers to the inside edges – they work really well to reduce the slamming noise! 😊 They’re very inexpensive and quick to install.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try soft-close hinges – they’re a bit more costly, but the closing is almost silent and very smooth. It’s really brilliant!

Don’t get discouraged, you’ll definitely manage it! 👍

Soft-close hinges are perfect. Just replace them, and problem solved.

Alternatively, attach felt pads to the doors, either on the front edge or the back edge, depending on the door stop location.

I would like to elaborate a bit more on this topic:

The classic Kallax shelving unit from IKEA has relatively simple doors that do not have built-in dampers. This often causes the doors to slam shut with full force against the frame, creating the typical banging noise.

If you are interested in a sustainable solution, I recommend using so-called "soft-close mechanisms." These can be installed either as hinges with integrated dampers or as separate damper strips.

Installing soft-close hinges requires some DIY skills and possibly drilling new holes because the Kallax unit is not originally equipped with standard furniture hinges designed for soft-close doors.

Alternatively, self-adhesive damping pads made of silicone, rubber, or foam are a simple and cost-effective option. It is important to place them in the right spot—usually on the inner side of the door or the cabinet frame—so the material gently absorbs the impact.

I also recommend properly adjusting the doors before attaching the pads: Make sure they are not too loose, as this significantly affects the closing action.

If you like, I can also provide specific product names and sources. Additionally, what are your requirements regarding the appearance? Some pads are visible, while others can be hidden out of sight.

One more question: Are the doors relatively light or somewhat heavier? This will influence the choice of damping.

However, installing the soft-close hinges requires some basic handyman skills.

Thank you for the detailed information! To answer your question: The doors are quite light, made from thin wood or hardboard.

Your suggestion about adjusting the doors sounds reasonable, so I will check that carefully. I have a fair amount of DIY experience, but I’m not a professional tradesperson – can I install something like this accurately myself, or would it be better to ask someone else?

I don’t mind if the dampers are visible, as long as they effectively reduce the banging.

I might post an update after I’ve tried it out.

Summary of the options:

1. Self-adhesive felt or silicone bumpers: Easy to install, inexpensive, reduce noise, visible.
2. Replacing standard hinges with soft-close models: Effective, more expensive, requires some craftsmanship.
3. Adjusting the doors: Often overrated, but can be effective when combined with bumpers.

Accurate positioning of the bumpers is important. Offset, on the contact surfaces, or on the corners. Incorrectly placed bumpers can make closing difficult or affect the appearance.

If you choose soft-close hinges, make sure they fit the exact dimensions and drilling patterns for Kallax doors, as these are not standardized.

These tips are based on common experience with simple shelf doors.
