Hello everyone, I am planning to relocate the doors on my Kallax shelving unit because I want to rearrange the shelves. Does anyone have experience with how to do this properly? Specifically, I am interested in how to best remove the hinges, how to reattach the doors in a different position, and whether special tools are needed or if this can be done easily with the included screwdriver. I would also like to know if it is possible to use the hinge holes in different positions when moving the doors later on, or if this causes stability issues. Thank you in advance for any tips and personal experiences!

Mark the holes at the new position. Use existing drill holes or make new ones, depending on the alignment.

It makes sense that new holes are better.

It is recommended to use small wall plugs if new holes are made.

Can I use standard wooden dowels for that? Are they better than the original IKEA fasteners?

And one more question: Is there a specific trick for aligning the doors when reattaching them to the shelf, so they hang straight and do not sit crooked? I’m worried that I might misadjust something and the doors won’t close properly anymore.

This is how I did it: First, screw the hinges in only lightly, then make small adjustments with the door closed—applying a bit of pressure or pulling on the door. IKEA hinges usually have small adjustment screws that allow very fine positioning.

Also, before fully tightening the screws, you can check whether the doors close smoothly and align flush with the shelf. This makes the alignment much easier.

You can safely use wooden dowels; just make sure they are not too thick for the panel thickness.

In my experience, using regular wooden dowels really improved the stability. The original fasteners are basically simple screws into particleboard, which works, but if you want something more sturdy, wooden dowels or small hardwood pins are a good choice.

Regarding alignment: The hinges are actually adjustable, as FlONE41 already mentioned. Just be careful to test and tighten them little by little. With patience, the result looks great, and you’ll have learned something useful for next time. 🙂

Hey! The topic of repositioning KALLAX doors is great because the shelving unit is so flexible! 🙂

I recently repositioned my doors and found it excellent that the hinges can be finely adjusted, so all the doors close neatly.

My tip: Make small marks beforehand where the hinges should go – this helps you work more accurately when attaching them and prevents wrong holes. Then pre-drill, insert anchors, and carefully tighten the screws.

It works really well and is a lot of fun to see how much more personalized the shelving unit becomes! Good luck! 🙂
