Hello everyone,
I am currently facing a common issue during the installation of my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet fronts: the doors are not closing properly. Some of them stick or are slightly misaligned.
I am especially interested in how to optimize the installation and fine adjustment of the doors so that all of them close precisely and evenly, without gaps or sagging.
Does anyone have tips on how to proceed to avoid errors from the start? Are there any proven tricks for adjusting the hinges or preparing the fronts and cabinet boxes?
Perhaps advice on the right tools or the order of assembly?
I would like to avoid having to readjust or fuss with each door multiple times afterward.
Thanks for your experiences and advice!

Hello FREDERIC62,
A proven sequence for adjusting 3D hinges is:
- First, slightly loosen all hinge screws (the mounting parts on both the cabinet frame and the door), but do not fully loosen them; they should be movable but not loose.
- Start by adjusting the depth screw (this moves the door forward or backward relative to the cabinet front). This ensures the door sits flush and straight.
- Next, adjust the lateral position (so that the gaps on the right and left sides are symmetrical).
- Finally, adjust the height to make sure the doors hang evenly at the top and bottom.
As you proceed, you can slowly tighten the screws, checking each time to ensure the position remains correct.
It is important not to tighten everything too early, as this will make it difficult to access the adjustment levers properly.
If some doors stick, this may indicate slight warping or installation errors in the cabinet frames. It is possible that the hinges were not mounted perfectly parallel.
Did you drill the holes exactly according to the instructions during installation? This helps achieve precise hinge alignment.

Additional advice regarding tightening the screws: Tighten the screws only by hand, usually around 0.5 to 0.7 Nm. Over-tightening can cause the screws to tear out of the particleboard material.
A tip for handling the hinges: Make adjustments in small increments, about 1 to 2 mm (0.04 to 0.08 inches) per adjustment, and always check how the doors respond. Especially the depth adjustment significantly changes the appearance from the front.
It is also worth mentioning that the hinge plates on the cabinet body should be aligned carefully. Loosen the screws slightly beforehand and shift them gently to find the optimal position. Ikea also recommends this in their instructional videos.
My secret tip for Ikea Metod cabinets is: always hang all the doors first, leaving them slightly loose. Then, with a good glass of water nearby, check if everything is perfectly level.
If the doors still don’t close properly, there’s a small trick I learned from a carpenter: a very slight rocking motion during adjustment helps the hinge to “settle in.”
Sometimes, it’s the little movements that make the difference.

Many people forget that the damping and the opening angle must also be checked at the hinges.
If the door sticks, it could be due to incorrectly adjusted or broken dampers.
Also check: Are all plastic parts on the hinges smooth? Dirt and plastic residue can cause obstruction.

I felt the same way as you, FREDERIC62, and was really frustrated with the doors.
What helped me a lot was not losing patience and not stressing out when things didn’t work right away.
It’s okay to have to adjust the screws several times to get everything to fit properly.
Taking a short break, having a coffee, and then coming back with fresh eyes made a big difference for me.
The rooms and lighting conditions also matter—a lot of small details aren’t as visible in diffuse light.

Is there a recommended order for adjusting the individual screws on the hinges?Yes, I’d like to confirm this briefly:
- Depth adjustment first (to fit the door flush with the frame)
- Side-to-side adjustment next
- Height adjustment last
This sequence allows for the best door alignment.
Also, make sure to hang the doors only after the hinges are fully installed, as this gives you more flexibility when fine-tuning.
