Hello everyone, I am planning to relocate the doors on my Kallax shelving unit because I want to rearrange the shelves. Does anyone have experience with how to do this properly? Specifically, I am interested in how to best remove the hinges, how to reattach the doors in a different position, and whether special tools are needed or if this can be done easily with the included screwdriver. I would also like to know if it is possible to use the hinge holes in different positions when moving the doors later on, or if this causes stability issues. Thank you in advance for any tips and personal experiences!

Does anyone have experience with how to do this exactly? Specifically, I’m interested in the best way to remove the hingesThis is a great question because many people underestimate how careful you need to be with KALLAX doors. I recently tried to reposition the doors myself and underestimated how fragile the hinges are. I carefully loosened them with a small screwdriver, then removed the entire door. It’s really important to only rotate the hinges once all screws are fully loosened. The provided tool is usually sufficient, but a small Phillips screwdriver works better than larger bits.

whether you need special tools for this or if it’s possible with the included screwdriverIn my case, the bit on the IKEA screwdriver was enough, but I still felt more comfortable using a smaller screwdriver in that area. Patience is also important; it doesn’t go quickly without risking damage.
In summary, please consider the following:
1. Before any installation, fully loosen all screws to prevent the doors from sticking.
2. The existing drill holes are optimized for the original position. If relocating the doors, it is advisable to drill new holes for the hinges to avoid stability issues and misalignment.
3. A standard Phillips screwdriver is usually sufficient for fastening; no special tools are needed.
4. It is recommended to use small wall plugs if new holes are drilled, to ensure stability in the wood.
Following these steps allows for smooth repositioning of the doors when done carefully.

It's great that you're giving it a try! 🙂 I've also repositioned my KALLAX doors because I changed the layout. The key is patience and enjoying the process, and it will work out perfectly!
That's exactly how I did it too! Better to go slowly to avoid any damage. I also predrilled the new holes with a small drill bit, which makes everything much more stable and neat.
Fingers crossed for you, it will turn out great! 🙂

Regarding stability when relocating the KALLAX doors: The furniture is made of particle board, so the original holes are not very durable if you want to reuse them. When repositioning, it is essential to pre-drill at the new locations and, if necessary, use wooden dowels and sturdy screws. This significantly extends the durability.
By the way, the hinges are specifically designed for such adjustments and can be moved multiple times without concern – as long as the wooden frame does not have major cracks or fraying.
