Good morning everyone,

For the past few weeks, I have been experiencing an issue with the doors of my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit, where they sometimes become very difficult to open and close. This does not happen consistently but rather in phases – sometimes the doors operate smoothly, then they stick again and require much more force to move.

My question is: What could be causing this? I have already checked whether anything has come loose in the hinges or if any screws are loose, but I couldn’t find anything unusual. It also doesn’t seem directly related to dust or foreign objects in the hinges.

Does anyone have an idea if this might be due to fluctuations in temperature or humidity? Or does anyone know of a similar problem and can share advice on how to permanently fix such troublesome stiffness? I would appreciate any expert opinions!

Hello Ardati,

In my experience, difficulty in opening KALLAX doors is usually caused by the hinges, which may be adjusted too tightly or blocked by light dirt. Slight warping due to moisture is also possible, especially if the shelving unit is placed in a more humid room.

I recommend carefully applying a suitable lubricant (such as WD-40 or similar) to the hinges and then making minimal adjustments to the screws. This often helps because it allows the mechanism to operate more smoothly again.

Check if the doors are properly aligned in their tracks. Sometimes they stick due to slight distortions or if the shelf panel is not positioned exactly at the correct angle.

I’m happy to provide a brief guide on how to properly investigate this issue:

1. Check the hinges: Loose screws can cause the door to become misaligned. Make sure they are tight, but not overly tightened, as this can make movement difficult.

2. Observe the movement: Open and close the door slowly and pay attention to any spots where it sticks or catches. Dirt or debris may be present there.

3. Cleaning: Clean the hinges with a dry cloth and possibly a small brush to remove dust or fibers.

4. Lubrication: Use a suitable lubricant—avoid oily liquids that attract dust. A dry PTFE spray or silicone spray is ideal.

5. Inspect the material: Since KALLAX shelves often use coated wood, slight swelling can occur due to moisture, which may hinder the hinge. If possible, increase ventilation in the room.

Conclusion: Stiff doors are usually caused by mechanical strain, dirt, or material damage due to environmental factors. I hope this helps!

I would like to add that, especially with KALLAX, using the original hinges with spring tension is important. If hinges have been replaced at some point, spare parts might not fit perfectly, which can cause stiffness.

A brief note on this: WD-40 mainly serves as a corrosion protector and water displacer, but it is not a long-lasting lubricant. For permanent smooth operation, I recommend using silicone or PTFE spray instead.

I think it’s great that some concrete tips are already being shared here! With my furniture, I often get really annoyed by doors that use clip-on hinges. When they become stiff, it’s not just frustrating, I also worry that something might break.

If the doors on your furniture sometimes move unexpectedly more smoothly and then catch again, it could maybe be due to slight changes in moisture. Wood does expand and contract slightly. Have you tried completely removing the doors and checking the hinges directly on the cabinet frame?
