Hello everyone, I recently fitted an Ikea Kallax shelving unit with matching doors. However, I have noticed that the doors were mounted too deep, meaning they sit much lower in the frame and do not align flush with the top edge of the shelving unit. This not only looks unattractive but also makes operation more difficult because they catch on the bottom edge.

Now my actual question: How can I remove the doors from a Kallax unit if they have been installed too deep? Do I need to dismantle the hinges, or is there a trick to take the doors off without damaging the entire structure? I would really appreciate any tips, experiences, or a step-by-step guide!

First: The doors on the Kallax are usually attached with so-called clip hinges, which can be released from inside the cabinet by gently lifting and pulling them out.

If the doors are positioned too low, I would recommend checking the hinges on the frame first. Often, the doors can be lifted slightly over the hinge arms and then pulled forward to remove them.

It is possible to remove the doors without detaching the hinges, but this requires some skill and care. Alternatively, you can completely unscrew the hinges, which makes removal much easier.

Slightly lift the door, then pull it forward. If this is difficult, loosen the screws on the hinges. This will allow you to remove the doors.

This is a brief summary, but I wonder if it covers all variants of the Kallax. There are models where the doors are set deeper, for example to accommodate plinths or additional panels.

Are there structural differences in the hinges that make these installation variants easier or more difficult? I would like to clarify this before disassembly to avoid damaging the doors.

Different Kallax models usually use the same hinges. Lift the door, pull it out from the front, then you can see if the hinges need to be completely removed.

To remove the Kallax doors that are installed too low, I recommend the following procedure:

1. First, slightly open the door and carefully inspect the hinge area. Kallax doors are typically fitted with concealed hinges that are recessed into the door and screwed onto the carcass panel.

2. Try lifting the door at the top edge. These hinges usually have a mechanism that allows you to release the door from the mounting by gently lifting it upwards and then carefully pulling it forward.

3. If this step is not sufficient, you can unscrew the hinge screws attached to the carcass using a Phillips screwdriver. This is usually the safest method for secure removal.

4. If the hinge is covered by a cap or plastic part, this must be carefully removed before the screws can be accessed.

5. After removal, measure the hinge position with a tape measure and adjust the height precisely during reinstallation to avoid the door sitting too low again.

One more tip: when reinstalling, make sure the hinges are properly aligned so that the door closes evenly.

I wonder if your doors might also be mounted using mounting brackets or rails, as that could complicate the situation somewhat. How is it with your model?
