Hello everyone,

I have a BILLY shelving unit from IKEA with doors that I would like to make open a bit more. The problem is that the doors on my unit are quite hard to open and close—especially if I don’t grab them exactly in the center, they sometimes get stuck or don’t close properly.

My question is: Are there any ways to modify or adjust the BILLY doors to make them easier to open and close more smoothly? Maybe someone has experience with making the doors “more open” without completely replacing the hinges or significantly changing the construction. I’m also open to small DIY tips or advice on alternative hardware that is compatible with the BILLY.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I know that all too well, it can be really annoying! I had the same issue with my BILLY where the doors would sometimes stick and you had to push hard.

Sometimes, simply adjusting the hinges a little helps – IKEA hinges often have small screws that allow you to fine-tune the position of the doors. This way, you can make the doors operate more smoothly.

If you want, I can gladly explain how I did it; maybe it will help you as well. Sometimes it just takes a bit of trial and error and patience 🙂

The issue with the doors of the BILLY shelf unit is usually related to the type of hinges IKEA uses. These are typically clip-on hinges with a damping mechanism that, if adjusted too tightly or too loosely, can make opening and closing difficult.

I would recommend checking the following steps first:

1. Loosen the screws on the hinges and realign the door so it hangs straight.
2. Test the damping mechanism to see if it catches or provides too much resistance.
3. Optional: Replace the hinges with ones that have less damping or without a damper if the door is too hard to open.

Additionally, the door stops can be lightly sanded if they are very close to the cabinet wall and causing friction.

To assist you better: How old is your shelf? Are the doors inset or do they simply overlay the frame? What’s your impression of the hinge after loosening the door? Does it then operate more smoothly?

With some patience, this can be significantly improved.

In short: Loosen the screws on the hinge, adjust the door accordingly, and then tighten them again. If it still sticks, insert plastic shims or slightly adjust the door stop position. This will improve the door’s opening and closing.

If opening is too stiff, use hinges without dampers

That also sounds logical to me. In the end, with my BILLY shelf, I adjusted the doors slightly further apart at the edges, which makes opening easier.

It is also important that the base is neither overloaded nor warped, as this can cause the shelf to twist slightly, affecting the doors.

Sometimes I have also read that a bit of wax or silicone oil on the hinges can help if the mechanism is somewhat stiff.

Hey, it’s great to see so much discussion here about BILLY doors! 🙂

I had the same issue and just used smaller magnetic catches, which I glued inside on the right side of the shelf. This keeps the doors slightly open but still closes them securely.

Also, attaching a small wooden handle makes opening much easier! Just screw or glue a small handle to the door—no more fumbling 😉

Don’t let the doors frustrate you—we can easily solve this!
