Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

May I ask what your overall cost was, including appliances?

For us, the IKEA kitchen offered the best value for money. We also had time to assemble it ourselves. Although it took quite a while (about 8 days), we didn’t really expect that, but it wasn’t tricky or difficult at all.

However, assembling 18 cabinets with interiors does take time, and we would definitely choose an IKEA kitchen again. Especially because of the price transparency, which we missed in the kitchen showrooms.

For appliances, we chose the stove and refrigerator from IKEA. The oven and microwave are from Neff, and the dishwasher is from Siemens.

We currently have an IKEA kitchen in our rental house—an older Faktum model—but it’s been almost 10 years, and I still find it beautiful. There has never been any issue with it either. I also think IKEA makes good kitchens.

We probably would have had the kitchen fully assembled and installed by professionals, and with installation costs included, the price would have ended up roughly the same as in a kitchen showroom. There we had seen a kitchen that we definitely wanted just based on how it looked. Sometimes that just happens.

I didn’t find kitchen pricing in showrooms very transparent either. But in the one where we ended up buying, we agreed with the consultant from the start that we didn’t want to hear about percentages and discounts—we just wanted the final price. He understood that and always gave us the price directly. Even when we wanted to make changes (like upgrading appliances), he could always tell us exactly how much more or less it would cost.

We compared the price of the final kitchen by having it planned by two other kitchen showrooms as well. The price differences were negligible. For a total of nearly 20,000 euros, the differences were about 100–200 euros. So of course we bought where we had the best initial consultation and planning.

We stayed just under 10,000.

We spent 8,100 at IKEA (including the cooktop with downdraft extractor and the fridge-freezer combo).

The Neff hide and slide oven was 899 (a discounted display/single item from our specialist dealer).
The Neff microwave was 210 (found on Amazon Warehouse).
The Siemens dishwasher was 660 (it projects funny little images on the floor showing its status… weird feature…).

After deducting the downdraft cooktop and fridge-freezer combo, that’s probably not even €6,000 for the cabinets. I'm always impressed by the variety of design options possible at such a price for a stylish kitchen, especially when, as in this case, you add a good dose of taste and imagination!

…we also added that to our Ikea kitchen and really enjoy the amusing little light display.

What is the model name or function of the projection of images onto the floor called? I searched for it but couldn’t find anything. Thanks.

I think the feature is called Info Light.

White wall with door frame on the left, wooden floor, damaged floor edge; clock showing 15:08 projected

Wooden post next to white door frame inside; light beams reflecting on the wood surface

Glowing toothbrush symbol projected on wooden wall beside door frame.

And the exact name?
I don’t actually know, it was the only one with an A+++ rating that was available at the Media Markt at that time.

Unfortunately, I can’t check myself because I am 250 km (155 miles) away from the construction site.
