ᐅ KALLAX doors are hitting the new baseboards – any solutions?

Hello everyone,

I’m facing an issue with my new KALLAX shelves from IKEA, specifically with the doors. During assembly and placement, I noticed that the doors hit the baseboards on the wall as soon as I open them. The shelf is placed directly against the wall, and the doors seem either too wide or don’t extend far enough to overlap the baseboards.

Since I prefer not to remove the baseboards or alter the entire wall covering, I’m wondering if anyone has experience with this or knows possible solutions to avoid this problem. Maybe there are alternative door hinges, special spacing options for installation, or other tricks I haven’t thought of yet.

I would appreciate well-informed tips that also include a brief explanation of how they can be implemented. Thanks in advance!

What do you think about special hinges? Do you need to drill new holes then? And can you reuse the original screws?

Special hinges, such as flush-mount door hinges, can change the door’s swing path so that it protrudes less. However, it is almost always necessary to drill new holes or at least enlarge the existing ones because the drilling patterns usually don’t match. The original screws often cannot be reused since different hinges require different screws and mounting plates.

Practically, this means:

- You might need a new mounting plate inside the cabinet.
- The hinge positioning must be very precise; otherwise, the doors won’t fit properly.

If you’re not very experienced with DIY or carpentry, this could be challenging.

Alternatively:

- If you can allow a 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 inch) gap to the wall, it’s best to avoid changing the hinges.
- A small recess in the baseboard is a permanent, clean solution that does not affect the door attachment.

My advice: First check if a gap is possible, then consider adjusting the molding. Change the hinges only if you’re confident with furniture assembly.

I currently have almost no gap between the back of the shelf and the wall

If space isn’t an issue, my suggestion would be to carefully sand down the molding or gently bevel it with a sharp knife. This way, you won’t damage the molding but simply create room for the door.

Replacing hinges can be difficult
I completely agree. For those who aren’t handy, that approach can be tricky. It’s better to slightly move the shelf away from the wall and place felt pads behind the doors.

Or, as mentioned, a practical quick fix: attach masking tape or another soft material to the door frame – it’s not a high-end solution, but it’s effective and fast to implement. 😉

If you don’t want to permanently alter the doors, the best solution is to move the shelves slightly away from the wall. Alternatively, if the baseboards have a low profile, you can trim them back at the specific spot using a wood chisel.

Replacing the hinges is often time-consuming and can lead to unpredictable adjustments.

In summary: increase the gap or modify the baseboard, and only replace the hinge if you are willing to undertake more extensive modifications.

Hey Gilo39,

it’s a minor annoyance, but with some patience it can be fixed.

I had a similar issue with my KALLAX shelf, so I moved it about 2 cm (0.8 inches) away from the wall, placed it on soft furniture pads, and then attached small, thin spacers to the doors to prevent them from rubbing against the baseboard.

Sometimes it’s the little tricks that really make a difference. 🙂

If it’s mainly a matter of appearance, a subtle adjustment of the baseboard where the door meets it with a small, sharp carving tool can help – carefully, of course!

Good luck!
