Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Billy shelves – the doors keep sticking, especially after summer or when the humidity changes. My question is: how can I effectively prevent the doors of my Billy shelves from sticking or becoming hard to open? Are there any specific methods, tips, or preventive measures I can use? It would also be important for me to know if I can adjust the hinges myself without damaging the shelving. Thanks in advance for your advice!

If you want, I can also provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to properly adjust the hinges.

Thanks for offering! A detailed guide would be great since I’ve only made rough adjustments so far and wasn’t sure what the correct procedure is. Also, are there any special tools needed for this, or will a standard Phillips screwdriver be sufficient?

Glad to help, ranepi!

For the basic adjustment of the Billy hinges, you usually only need a standard Phillips screwdriver.

1. First, close the door and check for any binding.
2. Then, loosen or tighten the screw on the hinge plate to adjust the horizontal position of the door.
3. Next, turn the adjustment screw on the hinge arm to set the depth (whether the door is closer to or further from the shelf).
4. Sometimes there is a third screw for height adjustment.

It’s important to make only small turns and check in between to see if the door closes properly. Proper alignment takes a bit of patience but isn’t complicated.

If you like, I can also write a short guide with sketches to illustrate the steps.

As a precaution, you can leave a small gap between the door and the shelf to allow the wood to expand without sticking. If the doors remain permanently misaligned, the only solutions are readjusting or, in extreme cases, sanding them down.

A simple Phillips screwdriver is usually sufficient, but a high-quality one with a good grip makes the task easier.

As a supplement:

In addition to adjusting the doors, you should avoid overloading the shelves, as excessive bending can cause the doors to warp.

Lightly rub the door edges with wax or furniture polish to improve sliding.

This is a useful recommendation to reduce friction. I recommend furniture wax for wood because it lasts long and is easy to apply. Cleaning oil can also be harmful to particleboard.

Hello ranepi,

I’d like to add a quick note: Make sure all the screws on the hinges are regularly tightened, as even slightly loose connections can cause irregularities when opening the door.

If you look closely, you might be able to tell if the door is slightly warped. In that case, adjusting the hinges may not be enough, and you might need to sand down the door edge or remove some material from the frame side.

During the initial installation, the hinge adjustment is usually pretty good, but due to temperature and humidity changes, the components can shift. So: check regularly, and it will keep getting better 🙂

One small tip on the side, ranepi: If the doors stick very tightly, it can also be due to small loose wood fibers from chipboard acting like 'dirt.' A vacuum cleaner with a narrow nozzle helps to remove these fibers before resorting to sandpaper 😉

Preventive measures are the best solution.

I completely agree, better to take some precautions than to have trouble with sticking doors later. Good luck!
