Hello everyone,

I recently replaced the doors on my IKEA Kallax shelf and covered them with new wallpaper to change the design. However, I noticed that the doors now open much less smoothly than before. The hinges don’t seem to be damaged, and they haven’t been adjusted recently. My question is: what could cause the doors of a Kallax unit to become noticeably harder to open after reapplying wallpaper?

I suspect the wallpaper might be affecting the hinge or the door stop, but I’m not sure. It could also be due to slight warping of the doors or other small details that aren’t obvious at first glance.

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello Sebastia67,

Your observation sounds reasonable at first. If the doors become harder to open after wallpapering, it is usually because the new wallpaper slightly thickens the back or edges of the doors. Especially with Kallax-style doors, the gap between the door and the frame is often quite tight.

Additionally, moisture from the wallpaper or adhesive can affect the wood or particle boards, causing them to swell slightly – this can significantly impair the fit. Another point is that the new door handles or soft-close mechanisms may be positioned slightly differently, changing the leverage or movement.

My advice: First, check whether the doors are sitting flush. A small gap near the hinges or an unintended misalignment can already make opening more difficult. Gently adjusting the hinges, if they are adjustable, might also help.

Also, let the doors dry completely for a few days, as the moisture often regulates itself over time. I hope this helps you for now!

The most likely cause is that the wallpaper makes the door edge thicker, causing it to fit too tightly. So, you could sand down the edge a bit or make the wallpaper thinner along the edge.

Hello Sebastia67,

I’ll explain exactly what can happen and what you should check:

1. Material swelling: Wallpaper (especially when applied with paste) can introduce moisture into the door edges or the chipboard of the door. This causes slight swelling, which changes the dimensions and makes the door harder to open.

2. Thickness of the wallpaper: As mentioned, an additional layer on the door increases its thickness or width. This leads to more friction against the frame or a too-tight gap.

3. Hinge adjustment: On Kallax units, the hinges are often adjustable. A slight realignment can help reduce rubbing.

What can you do?

- Measure the gaps of the door edges before and after wallpapering.
- If possible, use thin wallpaper or lightly sand down the wallpaper edges.
- Allow the doors to dry for at least 24-48 hours after wallpapering.
- Carefully adjust the hinges with a screwdriver to increase the door gap.

In short: The cause is quite clear—the increase in size due to the wallpaper and moisture absorption—and the solution lies in reducing moisture and making mechanical adjustments to the hinges or edges.

Hope this helps!

Sebastia67, the main challenge with Kallax doors after wallpapering is the minimal clearance between the door panel and the frame. A layer of wallpaper increases the effective thickness of the door, which mechanically puts more pressure on the hinges.

Additionally, the moisture in the adhesive causes temporary swelling of the wood core, further affecting the fit. This should reduce over time if the door is properly dried.

The best approach is:
- Check and, if necessary, readjust the hinges.
- Sand down the door edges to reduce excess material.
- Use a thin, waterproof adhesive or wallpaper paste to minimize moisture absorption.

These steps will help restore the original opening and closing function without major modifications.

I can only agree with the others and would like to add: Sometimes it’s the adhesive that hardens after drying, which limits the flexibility of the surface. This makes the door a bit stiffer when moving, in other words: quite hard to operate.

So if the door becomes very difficult to move after wallpapering, take it as an opportunity to measure it carefully and figure out where the resistance comes from. A bit of sanding, as Franck already mentioned, and some patience will usually get the Kallax doors moving smoothly again. 🙂

And hey, if you’re ever looking for fresh patterns for the door, there are really creative minds at work here in the forum. 😉
