Hello everyone, I unfortunately installed the doors on my Kallax shelf incorrectly. Some of the screws are crooked, the doors stick, and don’t close properly. I carefully followed the assembly instructions, but certain parts seem tricky, especially when aligning the hinges and the pre-drilled holes. Is there a way to fix the incorrect installation without having to drill new holes? I’d prefer to avoid visible damage to the wood or finish. What are your best tips or experiences for realigning Kallax doors after installation errors?

A quick update from me: If screws are really placed in the wrong spot, there are so-called repair wooden dowel kits available online at a low cost. These can be used to fill stripped holes and then drill new ones. Although this process takes a bit more effort, it provides the most stable solution.

If you want to try this, I recommend a few points:
- Let the filler dry thoroughly
- Choose the right dowel size (usually 6-8mm (0.24-0.31 inches))
- Carefully measure the new drill hole and pilot drill with a small drill bit

This will hold almost like new and does not look worse than minor wear and tear.

In short: Insert wooden dowels with glue, press them in, let them dry, then drill and screw. After that, it will hold firmly again.

Today I tried the paper trick and found that the top corner of the door slightly hits the shelf frame. This is probably caused by the incorrect drilling and seems to twist the hinge slightly.

I will carefully loosen the hinges, then fill the old holes with toothpicks and wood glue before realigning. For the hinges, I will gently use some sewing machine oil to make the adjustments easier, as you recommended.

One more question: Do the screws on Kallax doors need to be tightened fully with full torque, or is it better to leave them a bit looser to allow easier adjustments later? Of course, I want the doors to hold securely but also remain flexible for minor tweaks.

It’s best to tighten the screws firmly, but not so much that the wood cracks. The usual recommendation is to secure them firmly, but without forcing. Especially with the chipboard used in Kallax, overtightening can quickly cause damage.

Therefore, a sensible approach is to first screw them in lightly, adjust the hinges, and then gradually tighten them—this helps avoid excessive pressure and allows for easier fine-tuning.

Here’s a small tip from me: During my first installation, I was often too cautious tightening the screws for fear of damaging anything, and later the door was hardly stable. It’s better to find a safe middle ground that holds the screws firmly enough without stressing the material. You can usually spot any misalignments early and then loosen and readjust as needed.
