Hello everyone,

I recently had my IKEA Kallax shelving unit severely damaged due to flooding in my apartment. Some of the shelves have swollen, the side panels are warped, and the back panel is no longer flat. Now I’m wondering: Is there a way to get specific replacement parts for the Kallax system from IKEA or elsewhere? I’d prefer not to replace the entire unit, as many of the modules and accessories like boxes and doors would then become useless.

Has anyone had experience obtaining individual shelves, side panels, or back panels for the Kallax shelving unit—especially after water damage? Are there official options through IKEA customer service or reliable alternative sources? Thanks in advance for any help!

Just try searching on eBay or classified ads for used Kallax units. Many people sell individual modules or spare parts. This is often cheaper than buying new.

At the IKEA home furnishing center, you can sometimes buy Kallax parts by the pallet, which are returns or damaged modules.

Thanks for the tip, that sounds very reasonable. However, my nearest IKEA is not a home furnishing center but a smaller furniture store – does anyone have experience whether it’s better to get replacement parts there as well?

I recommend measuring the exact dimensions of the shelf and the damaged parts to have custom cuts made to fit perfectly.

I’ve done that and I’m confident it will help me find a local solution.

Are there any recommended materials that are more resistant to water damage? I would tend to avoid MDF, as it often swells quickly.

Yes, indeed. For wet areas or after water damage, waterproof plywood or multiplex boards are a good choice. These are solid and significantly more resistant to moisture than standard MDF or particleboard. At hardware stores or timber suppliers, you can also find edge banding that protects cut edges from moisture. For back panels, PVC-coated or coated hardboard panels are recommended, as they absorb hardly any water.

This significantly extends the lifespan, especially if you expect moisture exposure in the future.

In addition to the materials: Although custom-made parts are more expensive, investing in water-resistant wood is worthwhile to prevent future moisture damage. It is almost impossible to obtain replacement parts for Kallax units.
