Hello everyone,

I am planning to use a KALLAX shelving unit from Ikea in my workshop to store tools and materials. Since woodworking projects occasionally take place there, I am wondering how resistant the KALLAX surfaces are to wood dust. Wood dust can often settle into the material or get trapped in small pores, which can be problematic especially for veneered or lacquered surfaces.

Is it possible to simply wipe off wood dust with a damp cloth, or are there long-term damages? Is the material (MDF with melamine coating?) really suitable for a harsh workshop environment, or would you recommend a different material?

I am particularly interested in whether wood dust affects the KALLAX surface in any way, such as causing discoloration or other damage.

Thanks for your experience and opinions!

Hey, that's great that you want to use KALLAX in your workshop! 🙂

In short: The material is actually quite durable. The melamine coating is fairly resistant, and wood dust can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth. Just clean it regularly, and there shouldn’t be any issues.

Only with very fine dust, be careful not to rub too hard, as that could slightly damage the surface. But otherwise, it’s excellent! Good luck with your project!!!

Hello,

to approach the topic more systematically, here is a brief overview:

1. Material: KALLAX uses MDF panels with a melamine resin coating. Compared to raw wood, these are quite resistant to dust and moisture.

2. The surfaces generally tolerate dust deposits without issue, as long as no aggressive substances are involved.

3. Cleaning: Ideally use a damp microfiber cloth to loosen and remove dust. Please avoid solvents or harsh cleaners to protect the coating.

4. Long-term damage: Strong mechanical stress (for example, scratches from hard wood chips) can damage the surface, but plain dust does not.

In summary: KALLAX is quite suitable for your workshop needs, especially if you regularly remove the dust.

Best regards!

Hello gebufar,

your question is very practical and interesting. Technically, KALLAX is actually made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) coated with melamine resin.

Here are a few details:

- MDF: It is a wood-based panel that is quite homogeneous. Without a coating, however, it would be very absorbent and sensitive to moisture or dust.
- Melamine coating: This creates a hard, smooth surface that is water- and dirt-resistant. However, it is not completely resistant to mechanical wear.

Wood dust often consists of fine particles that can stick in small grooves or seams. With KALLAX, the surface is fairly flat and smooth, which reduces this adherence. Dust does not settle firmly and can usually be wiped off easily.

A risk can occur if, for example, fresh wood dust mixed with oil or resin is suspended in the air—this can cause sticky spots that may affect the coating in the long term. Regular cleaning helps with this.

If you want to place tools that cause strong vibrations on the KALLAX, the joints could suffer over time. But this is less about the dust and more about mechanical stress.

Summary: Wood dust itself is not a problem; you should avoid moisture and sticky dust. Regular care with a slightly damp cloth is ideal.

One more question: What kind of woodworking projects do you have planned in your workshop? Then I can give you more targeted advice.

I also use KALLAX in my workshop.
Wood dust can be easily wiped off when dampened. I haven’t experienced any discoloration or damage.
However, larger amounts of dust should be vacuumed out, otherwise it can settle on furniture in general.

I would like to question this a bit critically:

That is true, but MDF is made of wood fibers, which can swell or change due to mechanical impact even under the coating.

If you have a lot of wood dust that mixes with moisture (e.g., condensation or cleaning water with dust), it can undermine the surface. So it depends on how clean and dry you keep your KALLAX.

I also recommend checking the edges, as MDF edges are often more vulnerable if the coating is not applied properly.

In a tough workshop environment, I would only partially recommend KALLAX, depending on how rough your handling is. Have you considered anything more durable?
