Hello everyone,

I have a Kallax shelving unit from Ikea and would like to know if it’s possible to replace the back panels, which are usually made of thin cardboard. Specifically, I’m interested in whether this can be done easily or if there is a risk of damaging the unit.

I find the original back panels a bit thin and not very sturdy. Are there alternative back panels that can be installed afterwards? Or maybe an easy way to replace the back panel if it gets damaged?

I’m looking forward to your feedback and experiences, especially any advice on how to do this properly and safely without compromising the stability of the shelving unit. Thanks!

The back panels on Kallax units are actually made of thin cardboard. It is possible to replace them directly, but you need to be careful:

1. Original back panels are usually just slotted in or nailed.
2. Replacement back panels can be cut from sturdier materials (e.g., MDF).
3. Make sure the material is not too thick; otherwise, it won’t fit into the shelving unit.

You can simply swap out the back panel, but be cautious when removing it to avoid damaging any edges.

Hey Lilino, it’s great that you’re thinking about improving the back panel! 🙂

I’ve also replaced the back panels of my Kallax shelves with sturdier boards – it really makes a difference! You can easily do this with thin wooden boards or MDF panels, which you can have cut to size at a hardware store. Just carefully remove the old cardboard backing (usually possible without damaging the wood), insert the new panel, and either staple it or fix it with small nails.

This not only improves stability but also gives a neater appearance. And if you want, you can even paint or cover the panels with adhesive foil beforehand to create a personalized look. Go for it, it works great! :-)

Exactly, the back panels are rather simply constructed and are not load-bearing. While they provide minimal resistance against twisting, they do not support the shelf structurally.

If you want to replace the back panel, I suggest the following approach:

- Carefully pull out the cardboard from the sides to avoid damaging the back of the frame joints.
- The replacement back panel should be about the same thickness or slightly thinner to ensure a good fit.
- MDF or plywood about 3 mm (1/8 inch) thick offers a good balance of stability and ease of handling.
- Attach it preferably with small nails or fine screws, and if needed, additionally secure it with construction adhesive.

You can replace the back panel without damaging the shelf frame if you proceed carefully. This can also help create a sturdier piece of furniture, especially if the shelf is wall-mounted or carries heavy loads.

Feel free to ask if you have any questions 🙂
