Good morning everyone!

I am currently planning to assemble my Kallax shelf in the dining room and am wondering if there are back panels for the Kallax that actually seal well enough to prevent insects or small crawling creatures from getting through. I’m especially interested in whether there are materials or models that not only serve as a visual back panel but also provide a true barrier against insects.

Do you have any experience with special back panels that can be retrofitted, or perhaps any DIY tips on how to properly seal the back yourself? It is important to me that the shelf is completely closed at the back without having to apply complicated sealing later on. I would really appreciate any specific recommendations!

Standard chipboard or MDF panels in 3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 inches) thickness are often suitable. Simply cut them precisely to size and secure with small nails or screws; this should be sufficiently airtight. Insects usually enter through gaps, which can be sealed with adhesive tape.

Hi Gauflo!

I find your question really interesting because many people underestimate the problem with unwanted small guests. 🙂 My tip would be to use so-called "rigid foam boards," like those used in construction for insulation. They are very dense, easy to work with, and can still be painted or covered afterwards. This way, you get a reliable back panel that also helps keep insects out, plus a nice appearance! 😉

Use flexible sealing tapes when attaching the back panel to the Kallax unit. This will seal the joints and prevent small insects from entering.

Hello Gauflo, to answer your question in more detail: Kallax back panels from the range are usually thin pressboard or hardboard. These are not truly waterproof but mainly serve for stabilization. If you want insect-proofing, I would recommend replacing the back panel with a thin plywood board (at least 4-6 mm [0.16-0.24 inches]), precisely fitted and well sealed at the edges with acrylic or silicone.

A tip: Make sure the shelf unit itself does not have any gaps on the sides. Insects can crawl through very small cracks. Sometimes a fine sealing tape at the contact points between the wall and the back panel helps.

If you like, I can also share some sources for these special boards.

I once used a back panel made of PVC board – very smooth and practically waterproof. It somehow didn’t attract insects. Easy to cut and also looks neat. If you firmly seal it with silicone, it actually provides excellent waterproofing! 😊
