Hello everyone, I recently got a Kallax shelf from Ikea and have noticed that condensation seems to form on the back panel, which is made of thin wood or particleboard, especially on cooler nights. My main question is: Does anyone have experience with condensation buildup on the Kallax back panel and can share whether this has caused any long-term damage to the material? I am particularly interested in whether the moisture has actually led to warping, mold growth, or other structural issues. Are there any proven methods to prevent or reduce this problem? I look forward to your feedback and advice!

Long-term damage such as warping and mold is unfortunately not uncommon with untreated back panels.Wow, that almost sounds like you need to treat the Kallax shelf as a lab experiment to prevent it from failing 😉
But seriously: I’ve had my Kallax for 3 years now, it’s placed quite close to a pretty cold exterior wall, and of course it has a back panel. Sure, there’s sometimes condensation overnight, but so far I haven’t considered it a problem. I guess the key is to ventilate occasionally and avoid letting the temperature drop too much.
My advice: Just open a window now and then, maybe place some moisture-absorbing pads behind the back panel, and usually the situation is quite manageable. 🙂
It’s great to see so many details being shared here! 🙂
At first, I was worried about condensation on the back panel of the Kallax shelf, since I have it placed in my conservatory. But as parbau mentioned, with regular ventilation and a bit of attention, it works out really well.
Of course, I also placed a few moisture absorber packs behind the back panel, which really helped!
So just keep at it, ventilate regularly, and check the back from time to time—then it’s no big deal. Good luck to you all!

If condensation appears on the back panel of the Kallax, it is always an indication of humidity and temperature differences.
Damage usually occurs due to prolonged moisture exposure.
Quick ventilation, maintaining distance from the wall, and, if necessary, installing a back panel with better moisture resistance can help.
Deformations or mold can then be avoided.
