ᐅ Is it possible to assemble Ikea PLATSA shelves without using screws?

I have a rather specific question about the Ikea Platsa shelving system: Is it basically possible to assemble the PLATSA modules without screws, using only snap-fit connections or similar methods that make assembly easier and eliminate the need for a screwdriver? I’m asking because I will be moving and would prefer a more flexible and less time-consuming assembly system. I would also like to know if omitting the screws might reduce stability, or if the system is designed to be safe and stable even without screws. If anyone has experience with screw-free assembly, I would be very grateful for any advice, including tips on the best way to do it or any practical alternatives.

Some time ago, I faced a somewhat similar situation because I move frequently and wanted to assemble furniture with minimal screwing.

What worked well for me was using the screws but not tightening them fully. This way, I could assemble everything quickly and also disassemble it easily when moving.

The idea of adhesive joints sounds interesting – are there suitable products or experiences related to PLATSA?

In my experience, gluing in such systems is more of a last resort, and Ikea does not recommend it because the furniture should always be easy to disassemble. Personally, I would advise against trying adhesives, as they can damage the furniture and make later disassembly difficult.

Generally, I would follow Domau0’s suggestion and secure the shelves to the wall, which is much safer.

For Platsa, screws are essential.

If you skip screws, you risk wobbling and instability.

Wall mounting is mandatory, as it significantly increases safety.

Adhesive offers little benefit and makes remodeling or repairs more difficult.

My advice: use screws, and if more flexibility is needed, plan modular instead.

This is a good compromise, although it is not recommended for all modules. Depending on the load and the size of the module, fastening too loosely can reduce the rigidity of the connection and cause it to shift over time.

Additionally, it is important to regularly check whether screws have loosened and require retightening.

Without the mechanical tension of the screws, anchor bolts and connectors can loosen over time, especially with varying loads or movement.

That sums it up quite well.

Anyone who often modifies constructions should consider investing in a good set of screwdrivers and possibly magnetic screw pouches. This doesn’t eliminate the need for screws entirely, but it makes the process much easier.

Thank you all for the many detailed answers and insights!

For me, the situation has become clearer: I would not assemble the PLATSA system completely without screws, as stability cannot be guaranteed—especially with multiple units and regular use. The idea of using screws at least loosely sounds reasonable to make assembly and disassembly easier.

I will definitely plan for wall mounting and make use of the modular advantages of PLATSA. When things need to be done quickly, I will rely on screws to secure the units.

Again, thanks to everyone; you have helped me find the right compromise!
