Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble some IKEA Platsa furniture in my apartment and was wondering which assembly methods or techniques have proven to be the most durable over time. I am especially interested in which connections and assembly methods ensure the stability and longevity of the furniture over many years, even with frequent use and stress.

I am not only referring to the recommended fittings from IKEA but also to possible additional measures or alternative approaches for reinforcement that you might know from practical experience.

I look forward to well-founded advice and tips!

For IKEA PLATSA furniture, I generally recommend using the supplied fasteners exactly as instructed, since they are designed specifically for the modular system.

Additionally, it is advisable to use metal corner brackets to reinforce the connections. These can significantly improve stability, especially for taller shelves or modular units that are assembled together.

Stable back panels also contribute to long-term stability by preventing warping. Gluing or screwing these back panels with additional nails or screws noticeably increases robustness.

In summary: - Use original connectors according to the instructions - Add metal brackets at critical points - Reinforce back panels

These are proven measures that I have applied myself to several PLATSA units.

I would say: definitely use all the anchors and screws that IKEA provides.

Also, always include the back panels when assembling.

And if possible, additionally secure the furniture to the wall.

To explain the question in more detail: Although the assembly methods for PLATSA are standardized because the units are designed to be modular, there are individual differences in the load on the furniture parts.

The connection with the cam locks (rotating connectors) holds well, but these can loosen with frequent disassembly or improper use. Therefore, it is helpful to secure them with a small drop of wood glue.

There is also the option to use additional wood screws in areas with higher stress, such as near drawers or shelves. Using metal brackets at the corners also increases stability.

Additionally, it should be noted that the back panels serve a load-bearing function. Therefore, they should not only be slotted in but also fixed with small nails or extra screws.

If you often move or disassemble the furniture, I would recommend regularly checking the connectors and tightening them as needed.

This can definitely be confirmed. That’s why combining them with slightly hardened wood glue is a good idea to prevent the cam connectors from loosening without causing irreversible damage to the furniture.

Also important: when using metal brackets, be careful not to overload them to avoid exceeding the material stress at any single point.

Additional information: There are often questions about whether the furniture from PLATSA can be easily assembled and disassembled using the recommended cam lock fittings without issues. I strongly suggest proceeding carefully and checking the threads on the cam screws beforehand.

You can also use small plastic sleeves available at hardware stores to protect and reinforce the threads in the wood. These are helpful for frequent assembly and disassembly.

For stability, especially with tall cabinets or wall shelves, metal anchors or wall fasteners are essential to prevent the furniture from tipping over or becoming unstable under load.
