Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble some IKEA Platsa furniture in my apartment and was wondering which assembly methods or techniques have proven to be the most durable over time. I am especially interested in which connections and assembly methods ensure the stability and longevity of the furniture over many years, even with frequent use and stress.

I am not only referring to the recommended fittings from IKEA but also to possible additional measures or alternative approaches for reinforcement that you might know from practical experience.

I look forward to well-founded advice and tips!

I usually follow the original instructions and always include the back panel as well. Sometimes I add angle brackets, especially for larger structures. Also, always anchor it to the wall, and that’s sufficient.

Additionally, from a technical perspective, I would like to point out that the cross braces and back panels in Platsa play a structural role and help distribute forces more effectively.

Extra reinforcement using metal brackets is advisable when the furniture is subjected to heavy loads or large assemblies are constructed.

For the cam connector systems used, it is recommended to check for wear if the furniture is frequently assembled and disassembled. Defective connectors should be replaced, as they are crucial for stability.

Last but not least, wall mounting, for example with anti-tip straps, provides additional safety and durability.

Suggestion: Instead of using only cam connectors, you can use wooden dowels with wood glue at critical joints. This makes the furniture significantly more stable, but it is somewhat more time-consuming.

The back panel must be firmly secured, otherwise the piece of furniture will warp over time.

This is a very good tip. Wooden dowels provide significantly better load transfer and prevent joints from warping.

Of course, this method is more suitable for those with some woodworking skill, as the holes need to be drilled precisely.

A combination of dowels, cam connectors, and additionally secured backing panels usually results in the greatest durability.

Exactly. This combination brings together the advantages of each element:

- Cam connectors allow for modular disassembly
- Wooden dowels permanently strengthen the joints
- Back panels stabilize laterally and prevent warping

This way, larger PLATSA systems can be built solidly without becoming unstable quickly.
