Hello everyone, I am currently planning to make my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets more child-friendly – I’m especially concerned about the doors, as my little ones often play with them, and I want to reduce the risk of accidents. My specific question is: How can I childproof the doors of the Metod cabinets so that the kids don’t get their fingers caught or accidentally force doors open, which could then fall or cause damage? Are there proven modification methods, special safety devices, or simple adjustments that make daily use easier without having to rebuild the whole kitchen? I would really appreciate any tips, recommendations, or personal experiences!

Hey, great that you’re bringing up this topic! Child-friendly kitchens are really important, especially with sturdy furniture like the Metod cabinets. 😄 I’d recommend first switching to soft-close hinges. This greatly reduces the risk of fingers getting pinched because the doors close gently. You might also consider childproof handle covers or handles that are harder to open. For younger children, magnetic catches are great to prevent the doors from swinging open on their own. Important: Don’t get discouraged, there are many DIY solutions that are easy to implement! Push it through! 💪

Hello trareo54, to add to your question: there are several standardized ways to make Metod doors safer for children. First, you can retrofit soft-close hinges or dampers – these prevent rapid door movements. Second, you can replace the door handles with ones that require a specific turning radius or lever action to operate, making it harder for children to open them. Third, various manufacturers offer additional magnetic or latch locks that are hardly visible and integrate well into the furniture. If you are somewhat handy, you can usually install these solutions easily. If you like, I can provide exact product names or tips on how to install them.

Hello, I would like to first explain a few technical aspects relevant to converting the Metod doors into a child-friendly design. The doors are originally equipped with hinges that provide an appropriate torque to ensure relatively easy opening. For a child-safe conversion, I recommend the following steps:
- Installation of soft-close hinges from the IKEA range, which can be easily retrofitted. Be sure to position the dampers precisely to achieve optimal effect.
- Replacement or addition of existing handles with ergonomically protected ones, for example, elongated grip strips without sharp edges that make it harder for children to grasp.
- Installation of magnetic safety locks. Please note that these should be opened with a special key only parents have.
- For lower cabinets, attaching surface or door edge protectors made of soft plastic can offer additional protection.
Do you have specific cabinets with special fittings or existing hinges you want to use? That would make it easier to provide further recommendations.

I consider this recommendation to be the most effective basic solution. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the installation of the new hinges is precise, as otherwise the closing mechanism can be affected. I also recommend combining them with recessed handles or rounded handle strips, which reduce the risk of small hands getting caught or pinched.

For families with very young children, additional safety latches can be installed just out of the children’s reach. This further minimizes the risk of accidental opening.

Hey everyone! 😊 I’d like to share a small add-on that worked really well for us: we installed a soft silicone anti-pinch strip on the Metod doors, acting as a buffer between the door and the cabinet frame. This not only reduces pinching hazards but also dampens the noise when closing. 🛠️

We also chose magnetic catches that can be easily opened with a magnetic key – making them child-resistant but not too frustrating for adults.

Don’t underestimate the importance of getting children used to handling doors gently, too! If you want, I can tell you where we got the materials and how we installed everything – it’s really simple and fun!
