Hello,

we have basically finished planning our kitchen, but we can’t decide between the Smaklig and OTROLIG induction cooktops.

What are your experiences with the SMAKLIG and OTROLIG cooktops?

Which one would you recommend?

Thank you all

It also has a stainless steel edge that protects the glass surface if you accidentally bang a heavy pot or something against it.

Personally, I don’t like these stainless steel edges at all because they limit the size and placement of pans and pots. Nothing can extend even one centimeter (about 0.4 inches) beyond the edge if, for example, you want to use several large pans at the same time in the front and back. I have been cooking on induction for 20 years, and the edges of the cooktops have never been damaged, not even close. I can’t imagine a pot shattering the edge.

If these two are the options, then Otrolig, made by Whirlpool, has the fastest induction cooktops on the market! Some just prefer the extra horsepower.
Is there anything new from Whirlpool? For the OTROLIG cooktop, I see a 2.2 kW booster, and even on Whirlpool’s websites, I can’t find anything more powerful – maybe under a different brand (Bauknecht)? Even simpler Miele cooktops have a 3 kW booster, and larger models go up to 5.5 kW (if you really need that much).

Best regards,

Hello!

"I can’t imagine that you can chip the edge with a pot."
Unfortunately, you can. It happened to a friend with a cast iron pan. However, her cooktop wasn’t installed flush, so maybe that was the reason, I don’t know. In any case, her bad luck was a lesson for me.

What kind of huge pans do you have? Or what do you cook simultaneously in several large pans?
So far, I haven’t had any space issues because of the edge. It’s not that thick anyway.

Cooktops with beveled edges can have their glass borders easily damaged. Ikea cooktops have a thick glass border, which reduces this risk. However, this doesn't look very attractive. I also have a cooktop with a stainless steel border, and since I sometimes let things boil over, water doesn’t run off the cooktop as quickly.

With a large pan and a large pot, space gets tight quickly, but it is only a 60cm (24 inch) cooktop because there is no room for an 80cm (32 inch) one.

So far, I haven’t had any space issues because of the rim. It’s not that thick anyway.

With two 32cm (13 inches) pans, you already get into a tight spot.

For the first 15 years, I also had an induction cooktop with a rim, and even though it’s low, large pans lose contact and it stops working (luckily, I had gas for that):

I still use my old professional induction cooker for very large pots (40cm (16 inches) or so), because the cooktop is the same height as the rim.

And now I have an 80cm (31 inches) one without a rim, even from Ikea (Hökwardig), and I’m happy with it. I can even fit two large pans on the back. In the picture there’s only a 24cm (9.5 inches) and a 28cm (or 30cm? / 11 or 12 inches) pan, but you can already see on the right how tight it gets towards the front.

Your friend must have hit the cooktop very hard or from a bad angle.

There is another reason not to buy a cooktop from IKEA. The beeping sounds generally cannot be turned off. My cooktop beeps every time it is operated, even the touch controls in the default setting. Over time, it became annoying, and I managed to disable the sounds. Now it only beeps in case of malfunctions.
