Hello,

I’ll start by mentioning that I’m new here and hope—based on my previous searches—that I’m not asking a question that has already been answered many times.

We have space in a Faktum kitchen (abstract white) for a cabinet or sideboard with a shallow depth, maximum 30 cm (12 inches). The usual Faktum cabinets are too deep, so I had the (unusual?) idea to use a low Billy shelf and fit it with Faktum doors.

Has anyone done this before?
I understand that I would need to drill extra holes for the hinges and that the height won’t be a perfect match—using a 70 cm (28 inches) door would leave an open shelf space above or below, which isn’t an issue for me.

I would appreciate either a “No problem, go ahead” or a “Definitely don’t do it,” or anything in between.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, I can’t give you exact information regarding the doors. However, BILLY is not coated with melamine like kitchen cabinets and could eventually swell if used in the kitchen.

Thank you, I hadn’t actually considered that before. While the location probably wouldn’t pose a significant issue, it is another reason to carefully rethink my idea.

The FAKTUM wall cabinets can also be used as shallow base cabinets.
However, they are 35.5cm deep (14 inches), which is probably still too deep...
At least the dimensions and mounting options fit, since they are from the FAKTUM series as well.

Do you have a circular saw or know someone who does?

Here’s a suggestion: Buy wall cabinets in the suitable widths, and cut them down to the desired depth at the back using the circular saw.
If you shorten them enough so that the hole for the rear cam lock screw is cut off, you can either drill new holes at the back, depending on your skill, or simply attach them together differently.
You might also need to re-drill the shelf pin holes at the back, depending on the new depth.

It involves some DIY work (depending on the desired total width), but Ikea really invites modification: “Discover the possibilities.”

Best regards

The bathroom furniture is not melamine-coated either... I would take a close look at a suitable Billy unit and then decide. Depending on the color shade, the surface might be different. The holes are most likely spaced 32 mm (1.25 inches) apart. If the distance from the holes to the edge is 37 mm (1.46 inches) instead of 28 mm (1.1 inches) as with Faktum, you can simply use different mounting plates from Blum for the integral hinges.

@EinrichtungsNiete:
Thanks, I also considered the wall cabinets and whether I could live with the 37 cm (15 inches) depth. I generally decided against it, and the circle saw setup seems a bit too much hassle—especially since I’ve already put a lot of strain on my circle saw source lately... [ and my wife thinks it would be nice if some solutions didn’t have to be discovered in such a complicated way... ]

@IKEA-Experte:
Thanks. Yes, the hole spacing fits, and yes, it’s 37 mm (1.5 inches) from the edge instead of 28 mm (1.1 inches). However, I don’t understand what you mean by “mounting plates from Blum”? Am I missing something obvious? (I would have just drilled additional holes myself.)
