Hello everyone, I have a Besta shelving unit from Ikea, but unfortunately the original hinges are damaged. I’m now looking for suitable replacement hinges that can be used as alternatives. It’s important that the hinges fit without major modifications and use the same mounting points. I have done some research but found a lot of conflicting information about what is actually compatible. So my specific question is: Which hinges work as replacements for Ikea Besta? Are there any recommendations regarding manufacturers, dimensions, and installation, or perhaps tips on what to consider when replacing them? Thanks for your support!
Hello kloni, your question hits the mark. The topic of replacement hinges for Ikea Besta is actually a bit more complex than it seems at first glance.
First: The original hinges for Besta are usually 35-mm (1.38 inch) cup hinges with a 110° opening angle and integrated soft-close damping. If you need replacements, you should first measure the hole distances for mounting—both on the door and the cabinet. Many universal hinge models use the same standard dimensions, but not all of them.
For example, "Blum" hinges or "Hettich" models are often compatible, but come in different versions (clip-on, screw fastening, etc.). The cup depth (how deep the cup must be recessed into the door) and the door thickness are also important. Besta doors are usually between 16-18 mm (0.63–0.71 inch) thick, so you should match that with the replacement hinge.
A practical option is to buy original Besta hinges again from Ikea if possible, or to find used ones through classified ads. Otherwise, I recommend high-quality 35-mm (1.38 inch) cup hinges from Blum as replacements, since with some care they usually fit. There are also versions with damping (soft-close) available, for improved everyday functionality.
Could you specify more precisely which hinge type you have (e.g., with or without damping, opening angle) and about how old the unit is? Also, whether the door is made of thicker, thinner, or even lacquered material can be crucial for choosing the right hinge.

Hey kloni, welcome to the forum! Great question – I recently did this myself and can definitely encourage you to give it a try!
I ordered the original hinges for my Besta from Ikea, which arrived pretty quickly. Sometimes there are affordable alternatives from third-party suppliers, but I’ve found that Ikea’s originals either fit perfectly and work great, or you’ll have to spend a lot of effort adjusting them, which isn’t easy with hinges.
It’s important to check whether your Besta unit has doors with or without soft-closing mechanisms and whether they have factory-cutouts for soft-close hardware, because not every replacement fits exactly. In the end, the extra effort isn’t worth it for me, so I stick with the originals. 🙂

Hi kloni!
I think it’s great that you are looking so thoroughly for replacement hinges for your Ikea Besta. You might think it’s just a screw here and there, but there’s a lot of engineering behind it.
I once had a door with a broken hinge – so I simply switched to Blum soft-close retrofit hinges. They fit perfectly, look elegant, and make closing really smooth 🙂.
But be careful: You need to measure the door to check the size of the cup hole diameter and whether the hole is in the correct position. Ikea is fairly standardized, but there are always slight variations. My advice: Get a drilling template ruler for installation so you can drill precisely!

Hello kloni, I totally understand what you mean – hinges can sometimes be quite tricky. I had a similar experience last winter when the standard Besta hinges I had stopped working.
What helped me was simply removing the old hinges and taking them to a hardware store expert. They were able to clearly explain the relevant standards and show which alternatives would fit well. Having a direct comparison was really useful.
Sometimes it’s also worth checking the exact opening angles and damping, as PLOMA described – it makes life easier later on. I’m definitely keeping my fingers crossed that you find replacements that fit well and last a long time!
