Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Besta furniture set and would like to know about safe methods to secure the BESTA against tipping over. Since I have small children at home, stability is very important to me. I am aware of the included wall anchors but am unsure if these alone are sufficient or if additional measures are advisable. Does anyone have practical tips or experience on how to fasten the BESTA so that it stands securely and won’t tip over? Are there specific brackets, screws, or other techniques you would recommend? Thanks in advance!

You should definitely secure the BESTA to the wall. Use the supplied wall brackets and screw them into a load-bearing area, ideally into wall anchors or directly into the masonry. No additional measures are strictly necessary if the installation is done correctly.

To prevent tipping of IKEA BESTA units, I recommend the following steps:
- Step 1: Always secure the wall anchors supplied by IKEA to the wall. Make sure the screws are fastened into appropriate wall plugs or structurally sound areas of the wall.
- Step 2: Before installation, check that the wall is straight and even so the BESTA unit fits tightly against it.
- Step 3: For especially heavy loads, consider additional floor anchoring or anti-tip fittings, which can be purchased separately.
- Step 4: Avoid overloading the furniture beyond its maximum capacity, as this can compromise stability. A common mistake is to attach the wall brackets loosely, which greatly reduces their effectiveness. If unsure, check whether uneven floors in your home create specific tipping risks.

In summary: wall anchoring is mandatory, supplemented with additional securing measures as needed.

Exactly, that is the most important point. Additionally, I recommend ensuring that the screws are driven into solid material, not just plaster or drywall. For drywall, special cavity anchors should be used. If the BESTA unit is very tall, it’s also worth installing anti-tip straps, which are often available at hardware stores. These come in various types, such as metal cables or fabric straps. This combination significantly increases safety.

Great to see so many useful tips here already! 🙂 Recently, I managed to secure our BESTA cabinets to the wall using anti-tilt metal brackets, which I also screwed into the back of the cabinets. In my opinion, this creates a very stable setup! Additionally, I recommend not putting weight on the top edges of the furniture but distributing the load as evenly as possible. This way, everything stays very secure, and I feel much safer, especially with children around. So: definitely install the brackets and check the fastenings thoroughly!

Just to add: The included wall fixings are generally sufficient if installed correctly. It is always important to choose screws and anchors that are suitable for the type of wall. Concrete, brick, or drywall require different fixings. If you’re unsure, ask the hardware store staff for advice on the right anchors. Everything else is optional.
