I have an IKEA Besta sideboard with the standard doors, which have warped slightly over time. Now I notice that the doors either don’t close completely or catch slightly. My question is: how can I properly and precisely adjust the doors in a Besta system to achieve an even gap width and optimize closing? Are there specific screws or mechanisms that need to be used, and what is the best procedure for an accurate adjustment? I would appreciate a detailed explanation, including tips on mistakes to avoid.

Do you have soft-close or standard hinges?

Thanks, that’s helpful! In my case, they are just standard clip-on hinges without a soft-close feature. The tip about completely removing the door sounds reasonable, I will try that.

Is it possible to damage the hinge during adjustment if too much force is applied? Or do the screws tend to come loose if tightened too much? I want to avoid damaging the hinge by over-tightening during fine adjustments.

Very good question. Yes, the plastic bushings in the hinges can be damaged if excessive force is applied, or the screws may tear out, usually because they are anchored only in the wood. My recommendation: tighten the screws carefully, pay attention to where resistance begins, and then turn them only slightly further.

If the doors frequently become misaligned, it can also help to secure them with a drop of threadlocker (not glue, just a locking agent) after adjustment. Otherwise, it’s better to check and retighten regularly rather than overtighten once.

Remove the door from its hinges, make adjustments, leave the screws slightly loose, check the alignment, then tighten them. This helps prevent damage.

Great to see so many tips here! I also adjusted my Besta cabinet myself, and it’s definitely worth taking the time. Don’t get discouraged—adjusting the fittings is enjoyable, and the results are absolutely worth it! Just take it step by step, be patient, and you’ll have perfect doors!

I would like to add that there is a small trick that few people know: IKEA uses clip elements in some BESTA hinge types that clamp onto the door when adjusted to better secure it.

So, if your door still wobbles or doesn’t sit properly despite full adjustment, check whether these clips are installed and if they are properly engaged. Often, you need to carefully release and realign them before tightening the screws.

Additionally, it is helpful to use a spirit level ruler to check if the door surfaces are flush before adjusting, since warped material can only be compensated to a limited extent by adjustment.

How old is your BESTA system approximately? Older models sometimes had hinges with different designs, which can make readjustment a bit more difficult.

I bought the sideboard about 3 years ago, so it’s not a very old model. Thanks also for the tip about the clip elements; I’ll pay special attention to those when I make adjustments next time.

You have all been very helpful with your various suggestions and the advice on how to remove the doors. If I encounter any unexpected problems, I’ll get in touch again. Many thanks to everyone for the detailed responses!
