Hello everyone, I am planning a custom furniture project using the Ikea Besta system and would like to create a combination of open and closed elements. My idea is to build a shelving unit that includes open compartments for decoration or frequently used items, as well as closed cabinet doors for hidden storage. I have a few questions, especially regarding practical installation, material compatibility for the doors, and the optimal arrangement of the modules. It would be great if someone could share their experience on the best approach to build a stable and visually pleasing combination. What tips are there concerning fasteners, load-bearing capacity, and design options with different fronts? Thanks in advance!
For installation, I recommend the following sequence: First, assemble the individual modules completely, including the back panels on the closed elements. Then connect the modules to each other using the connecting elements. It is important to tighten all of these securely and evenly to avoid twisting or misalignment. The doors should only be installed after the modules have been fixed in place, as installing them earlier makes adjustment more difficult. For better stability at the module edges, optional metal brackets can be added inside if needed.
Sounds like an exciting project! From my experience with Besta, the combination of open and closed elements is actually great for design. A tip: if you want to make the open compartments a bit more dynamic, you could install individual shelves at different heights. This not only looks stylish but also uses the storage space more efficiently. I also chose doors with soft-close hinges – it adds a touch of luxury!
One more question regarding the design: Is it possible to mix different fronts (e.g., wood and painted doors) within the same shelving combination without any fitting issues? Are there any system-related limitations concerning the doors and their mounting, or can they be combined freely? The usable depth is the same for all modules, so it only concerns the front design.
The use of different front materials with BESTA is generally possible. The fronts are designed independently from the carcasses, and the mounting system is modular. However, it should be noted that varying material thicknesses and weights of doors can affect the adjustment of the hinges. Additionally, it is advisable to carefully plan the color or material transitions visually, as the depth and edge profiles of wood-effect fronts may appear different compared to smooth lacquered fronts.
