Hello everyone,
I am planning to upgrade my Ikea Besta sideboard by adding an integrated charging station. I have a few questions: What is the best way to make the necessary cutouts without compromising the furniture’s structural integrity and appearance? Which chargers or modules are recommended if I want to integrate wireless charging (Qi standard)? Also, I am interested in the process to ensure neat cable management inside and which tools are most suitable. Are there any experiences on how to properly connect mains power, and whether safety features like fuses or surge protection should be installed? I look forward to tips on practical steps, any required accessories, and advice on the expected effort in terms of time and materials. Thanks in advance to everyone sharing their experiences!

Make sure to use cables with sufficient cross-section (at least 22 AWG).

A very good tip! Especially since some people tend to underestimate the importance of electrical cables.

Additionally: For internal wiring inside the Besta, a flexible, shielded USB cable is usually sufficient. This helps prevent potential interference during charging caused by external electromagnetic fields. Be sure that the cable routing is not pinched and avoid sharp edges at openings. A small cable loop or edge protector can be helpful.

Regarding installation: In a similar project, I routed the cables along the back panel of the BESTA using small clips and later secured them with hot glue. Nothing got stuck, there were no disturbing noises, and everything remained stable.

If you have questions about fastening, feel free to specify which tools you have available.

Clear cable routing using cable ties and cable ducts. This keeps everything neat and safe.

The recommendation is generally good, but it is better to use metal cable ducts instead of simple plastic ones to ensure better heat dissipation and stability.

Sometimes ventilation behind the BESTA also plays a role, so whether you plan small ventilation slots.

I consider this very important, as temperature buildup is often underestimated. Small ventilation openings or grilles help significantly extend the lifespan of the installed electronics.

Also: definitely reconsider whether an outlet should be mounted inside the furniture itself. For safety reasons, I recommend routing the power cable out of the furniture with a well-planned cable management system and placing power supplies externally instead.
