Hello everyone,
Over the past few weeks, I have purchased several Ikea Besta furniture pieces and would now like to know how to care for and clean them in the gentlest way possible.
I am particularly interested in the following points:
- Which cleaning products are suitable for the surfaces, especially for the foil-covered and high-gloss fronts?
- Are there any special care tips to avoid scratches or dull spots?
- How often should the furniture be cleaned without damaging the surface?
- Are there any environmental factors to avoid, for example when placing the furniture near heaters or windows?
I look forward to detailed tips, personal experiences, and especially advice on how to keep this furniture looking good in the long term. Thanks in advance to everyone with knowledge on this topic!

Which cleaning products are suitable for the surfaces, especially for foil and high-gloss fronts?Mild soap solutions, such as dish soap in water, work very well for foil fronts. High-gloss fronts are more sensitive. The guidelines are:
- No alcohol-based cleaners
- No abrasive cleaners
- Prefer microfiber cloths

Are there special care tips to prevent scratches or dull spots?Scratches can be avoided by not using abrasive sponges or dirt particles. Dull spots caused by frequent and vigorous polishing can also be prevented by polishing gently and not too often.

How often should furniture be cleaned without damaging the surface?Depending on usage, but cleaning every one to two weeks is ideal. It’s better to clean more often gently than rarely and aggressively.

Are there environmental factors to avoid, for example near heating sources or windows?Heat, direct sunlight, and high humidity can damage surfaces. A location with consistent, mild conditions is optimal.
Hello everyone! ?
I would like to address the practical side: Sometimes small mishaps like fingerprints or water stains appear on the Besta furniture. I always find a spray bottle with lukewarm water and microfiber cleaning cloths very helpful – lightly spray, then wipe with the cloth, and I hardly notice any difference from “new.”
I can only agree, especially with high-gloss finishes this really makes a big difference.
It is important not to clean with too much moisture, as that can cause the edges to swell.
Enjoy caring for your BESTA furniture!

In addition to the previous tips, I would like to emphasize the proper preparation of cleaning agents:
- Always dilute the cleaning agent in water first.
- Never apply it undiluted, as this can cause discoloration and damage.
- Test on an inconspicuous corner before first use.
Another point: avoid prolonged exposure of the surface to water in order to protect the underlying wood material.
It is also recommended not to place furniture directly next to heaters, as temperature fluctuations can cause material stress.

Thank you all for the valuable advice!
I’m also curious: How do you deal with deeper scratches when the surface is already somewhat damaged? I’ve noticed some minor damage to the laminate on one of my BESTA cabinets and wonder if there’s an effective way to repair or conceal it without having to replace the entire front?
Also, are there any recommendations for keeping the inside of furniture—like shelves or cabinet interiors—clean, especially with frequent opening and dust buildup?

How do you deal with deeper scratches when the surface is already somewhat damaged?Repairing deeper scratches on laminate fronts is challenging. Usually, the only options are to replace the affected front or cover it with a suitable decorative film.
Minor surface scratches can be masked using furniture polish specifically designed for plastic surfaces or a touch-up pen matched to the color, but this is more of a temporary fix.
Regarding the inside surfaces:
- Regular dusting is usually sufficient.
- For stains, use a damp cloth with a mild cleaning agent.
- Avoid excessive moisture, as this could cause the material to swell.
How often do you use the furniture daily? With heavy use, you can also treat the interior surfaces with anti-dust sprays, but these should be applied sparingly.
