Hello everyone, I am planning to furnish my small office with IKEA Besta furniture, but I am facing the challenge of preparing these pieces in a way that makes them highly functional, durable, and space-saving. I am especially interested in how to assemble the furniture optimally, customize it, and which accessories are useful to ensure organization and ergonomics. Perhaps someone has experience with modifying or improving the Besta series specifically for a small office. How do you prepare this furniture for long-term use and maximum benefit? Tips, tricks, and specific recommendations – I am open to all suggestions!
Dilen provides a well-founded answer that I fully agree with. Here is an additional point that is often overlooked: the surface of Besta doors can easily be enhanced with films or paint. Especially for light-colored furniture, matte or textured films help prevent every speck of dust from becoming immediately visible.
Furthermore, installation in small rooms often requires disassembling the modules to comfortably get them through doors and hallways. Planning should take this into account – it is best to measure the route room by room in advance and decide on the best approach.
Regarding stability: also use the lower anchors and make sure to secure the furniture to the wall, especially in very tight spaces.

I agree with kulau and Dilen but would like to respond with a slightly different focus. When preparing Besta furniture for a small office, it is also important to plan for flexibility in its use.
- It’s better to buy more varied shelves with rows of holes, so you can easily adjust the shelf height at any time.
- Consider inserts like drawer organizers or boxes that help improve organization.
- Also use the outer sides of the Besta units to create additional storage space with magnetic board solutions or clips.
One detail I often overlook myself but that you should keep in mind: the right choice of handles/fronts makes a difference in everyday usability. Some handle rails look nice but can get in the way in tight spaces.

Keobla49, I’d like to say that it’s great how focused you are approaching this topic. Especially when working in small spaces, it can quickly become stressful. In my experience, it’s important not to put too much pressure on yourself to make everything perfect, but rather to take it step by step and figure out what is really needed.
Sometimes it also helps to assemble the furniture normally first and then organize the interior with practical solutions like boxes or flexible inserts. From my experience, the Besta series is very forgiving if you need to make adjustments afterward.
I would also ask about your working style and whether you prefer to work digitally or with paper, as that greatly affects the best way to prepare.

Could you please explain in more detail how you arrive at the problem of stability with Besta?Good question. The main issue is that the thin particle boards commonly used in Besta units can sometimes warp or deform under heavy load. Although IKEA offers back panels, they are usually made of thin cardboard or fiberboard, which do not provide much support.
I have personally experienced that after three years of intensive use and heavy binders, the corners of the cabinets tend to give way slightly. Therefore, I recommend using metal brackets or reinforcements made from aluminum profiles, which can be discreetly installed on the inside.

If the furniture is going to be used in a fixed location, wall mounting should definitely be pre-installed.

I would also be interested to know which types of reinforcements you specifically recommend and how best to install them without compromising the aesthetics.
Additionally, I was wondering whether choosing the right Besta modules (e.g., those with thicker back panels or frame construction) might make the main difference. Has anyone had experience with this?
For reinforcement: metal brackets from the hardware store, screwed in on the inside at as concealed locations as possible. This usually provides sufficient support without being visible or affecting the appearance. It is important that the screws go into solid areas, not just into the thin panels.
