Hi everyone, we are currently planning our housebuild quite intensively, and when it comes to choosing a heating system, we are considering using a heat pump. We have heard from friends that, in the long run, it can be more cost-effective because heating costs are reduced. However, these friends do not have one themselves yet; they are just thinking about it. What is your opinion on this? What should we consider? Would you recommend it? We are also thinking of getting advice soon from Vaillant, as they apparently have pretty good customer service. In general, I would appreciate any tips on this topic. Thanks in advance!

What will pellets cost in 10 years if everyone who can’t or won’t properly insulate replaces their oil heating systems with pellet boilers?I’m quite optimistic about this because pellets can also be made very well from wood that, for example, has been infested by bark beetles and can no longer be used for other purposes. So far, the current price trends in the timber market have hardly or not at all affected pellet prices. Will that change? No idea. One major advantage, I think, is the absence of a CO2 tax on the fuel.

(This is purely a personal observation! I have no statistics!)
In my circle of acquaintances, four people are currently installing pellet boilers. My plumbing specialist won’t take any new orders until mid-2022 because he’s installing so many pellet boilers. My solar technician, who previously focused more on solar thermal systems and wood-burning stoves with water jackets, is now also installing pellet systems — and because of that, he can’t install any photovoltaic systems before February.
I therefore expect the demand in Germany to double within the next two to three years. Maybe the bark beetle infestation will help a bit. But in 10 years, the wood will be gone (and none will have regrown yet). By then, the pellet price will have at least doubled (plus inflation, which is currently picking up again), and right on time, the chimney sweep will show up and explain what you have to do within a year to reduce your fine dust emissions...
I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. But at the moment, I’d have serious concerns if I had to install a pellet system.

If only there were heating systems that could be fueled with self-made fuel... ;-)
